From my understanding the Waldenesses were a strange mesh of Christianity and eastern ideas. They believed in reincarnation and karma. They also had degrees of initiation in their order, so they were also like Gnostics. It's quite possible the Waldenesses were a surviving Gnostic sect, or an offshoot thereof.
