That reminds of a question about when water freezes you can tap energy from its expansion but where does the energy come from, my idea was that liquid water stored the suns energy and then released it when it returned to ice, I sent it in but it was not published.

Simply put, as water freezes it releases heat energy. This energy is called the latent heat of freezing.

I suppose I was getting it the wrong way around, in that when Ice melts it stores heat energy, both are true arn't they?

Yes. Do you know what a degree of freedom is and how molecules use them to store and release thermal energy?
