Physicists predict Earth will become a chaotic world, with dire consequences

"If the Earth System gets into the region of chaotic behavior, we will lose all hope of somehow fixing the problem."
Humans aren't just making Earth warmer, they are making the climate chaotic, a stark new study suggests.

The new research, which was posted April 21 to the preprint database arXiv (opens in new tab), draws a broad and general picture of the full potential impact of human activity on the climate. And the picture isn't pretty.

While the study doesn't present a complete simulation of a climate model, it does paint a broad sketch of where we're heading if we don't curtail climate change and our unchecked use of fossil fuels, according to the study authors, scientists in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Porto in Portugal. .

"The implications of climate change are well known (droughts, heat waves, extreme phenomena, etc)," study researcher Orfeu Bertolami told Live Science in an email. "If the Earth System gets into the region of chaotic behavior, we will lose all hope of somehow fixing the problem."

This article was in arXiV.org!
It says that we will have different climate decade to decade and won't be able to fix the problem if we don't do something.

I have studied some chaos and this makes a great deal of sense.

Do they also happen to suggest what steps ought to be taken?

half emissions 2030 zero emissions 2050 as always.

Yes, well I can't do that. Most of humanity can't actually do this. We need energy to survive. Current energy production emits contaminants.

IMO scientists not only need to point out the problem, they are going to have to come up with the solution as well.

What should be done about "climate chaos?!" OMG, it's so obvious, pay more taxes! If you can't pay now, pay ASAP. Thank you Greta, we love you.

We need to innovate.

The last IPCC report made it clear.

The good news is government and corporations have the resources to meet the goal (I think, as in, without human death or discomfort).

The bad news is that they are not accessing the risk properly.

If we can get corporations and governments to account for their emissions down to small levels, then we can adjust the market with the future in mind and the market will create the innovation we need. Imagine having the market on our side to do this!

Were are the scientists in all of this?
Don't you think they also have some obligation to innovate?
They are the ones most likely to succeed.

Corporation have no real obligation to act and governments are too busy with their politics.

There are scientists working on this. The only way we succeed in this, IMO, is if science succeeds.

Trying to rely of public or corporation or government action, we are likely already doomed.
Our only real hope is in science.

I really wish watching Carl Sagon in Congress would be pitched as essential viewing in regards to climate change and what its all about and what it entails.

The scientists innovate quite a bit... just imagine if we could motivate the free market to do so.
