Radical is in the eye of the beholder. Radical is whatever is regarded as politically eccentric enough to be generally worrisome.
"Radical" goes back to the Latin "radix" - root.
A radical is, for example, a believer who rests her/his world view on scripture - independent of what the society s/he lives in has agreed upon.
Most "radical" world views are not compatible with democracy (except when you're a radical democrat).

The European Union was created to defend ourselves from a more and more globalized world.
The EU was created to protect us from ourselves and our nationalist tendencies. It has worked pretty well (with the notorious exceptions). Some just don't play well with others.

And that is why I deeply believe in the EU because it is synonym of cooperation and altruism.
