"Radical" goes back to the Latin "radix" - root.Radical is in the eye of the beholder. Radical is whatever is regarded as politically eccentric enough to be generally worrisome.
A radical is, for example, a believer who rests her/his world view on scripture - independent of what the society s/he lives in has agreed upon.
Most "radical" world views are not compatible with democracy (except when you're a radical democrat).
