Once upon a time, in lands far away, those little boxes people carry on them used to have voices. You know.. the ones with the screens on 'em, that people spend half their day gawking at. People used to hold them against their ear, with the bottom part directed at their mouth, and they would talk to other people, connected to their speakers by their own little box, possibly many miles away.

In an even longer time ago, those boxes were connected to the wall, and had cords. There was limits to how far away the other person could be while you were talking to them, or you'd quickly find yourself broke.

I miss those days, though. Texting is a pain. I could mop the floor and yap on the phone, but texting and mopping just isn't the same. "But I can plan out better what I want to say with text." That's a thing, too. I don't really want your polished replies, I like you as you are(generally speaking).

Anyone else miss the humble phone call?

I'm afraid dial-up internet destroyed all remorse I had for the phone. :D

Actually I don't miss it compared to video calling (zoom and others).

As far as texting goes, I have my computer linked to my cell texting so I can type out texts which makes it a lot better. But also, a text is not a conversation beyond "I'm here - where are you?" short messages for various things.

I actually am not a huge zoom fan. Much like texting or internet usage, I have to be stationary. And, I'd have a lot of explaining to do if I took my laptop to the toilet with me while on a zoom meeting.

I think we've had it about two months now!

I'm not sure if you were around for my miserable summer of pooping outdoors(in a porta potty in the yard), but the indoor plumbing isn't something I take for granted.

I still have two corded land line phones. Last summer I got two i-phones to replace our older cell phones when I switched from Verizon to XfinityMobile but those i-phones are still in the box. I have no use for a cell phone unless my car breaks down when I go to the grocery store.

Timing and aim... two of the most important skills one can have when a trip to the bathroom comes about.

I'm not even sure why honestly. Actually, I e gotten over the phone call thing, but I still hate voicemail, almost never leave them. Hate talking to myself.

I used to like calling my house from school and having the answering machine pick up so I could talk to the cat. Mom said she'd actually come to the box and stare.

    That's so cute :).

My cats come when called, but they'd be confused I think if I tried to talk to them from a machine or computer.

    I hated telephone bills! :)
I had the telephone account terminated and cut the line as soon as possible....the same month that I retired! My girlfriend was ok with that because we had mobile phones by then.
My daughter would spend ages on the phone when I was at work, and the bills would drag us back in to insecurity because our little emergency fund would get trashed yet again. And one month we got a bill in the hundreds of pounds....I found out that my son had been calling chat-lines with his friends, all great fun.

Even when I put a lock on the telephone dial my son learned how to 'tap out' numbers without using the dial. It was like living with the enemy, I'm sad to say.

When I was a kid, the phone company charged a pretty standard fee for local services. The extras were long distance. You could call and yap all day to people in the area, but out of area was a bit pricey.

With cell phones, you could get unlimited talk for a lump fee. You had to pay a bit extra for text(this was before the smartphone was commonplace). After awhile, they lumped talk/text together(and I think a small amount of data). This is the deal I still have. I can talk all day, but no one wants to. :(

I used to enjoy gazing idly out the window on the bus to work. I hardly ever do that now, I’m afraid I’m generally glued to the screen on my phone, like all the other passengers.

I sometimes feel like a dinosaur in waiting rooms... typically the only one reading... with my physical book...

I used to want to be a T-Rex, but its more probable I'm a triceratops.

Yes. I do. Texting is no way to sustain a relationship. It's far too brief and functional and you get no idea of the state of mind of your interlocutor.

Though, today, at least texting doesn't involve the insertion of "like" every alternate word.
