What if we began to keep track and to hold religious leaders to account for things they said? Currently they are not held to account by any formal system. They can make promises then break them and it be forgotten. They can slander without anyone noticing. I think that should change.

What would you think of starting a non-profit organization which, on a weekly basis, reports any:

    malicious speech
    promises
    broken promises
compulsion or pushy behavior and cult like behavior
    slander of other religious gatherings
    slander of people
    disorder
    unusual events

The volunteers would attend as many religious functions as possible, recording and reporting on any promises, malice, slander, etc. This would then be notarized and stored in a database, retrievable later. Ideally these would also be digitally signed in case they were needed for proof of speech.

Would this, in your opinion, improve religion?

Idk if it would improve it. In places like the US though, why treat Religious organizations to the same scrutiny as Politics?

    Unless they're somehow linked.

If anything like this existed I would be against it to ridiculously extreme lengths. Fundamentally in my opinion the issue is this: who cares what outsiders say about anything? Moreover another issue is this: no one can improve anything but God.

It would just be some weird group trying to control things to me.

Way too punitive and puritanical. It would be tyranny.

Its not for political porpoises :dolphin: . I think it will force some civility into sermons when speakers realize that what they are saying is being recorded and written in a public space. Maybe they will stop bad-mouthing other gatherings all the time. Maybe they will put a little more thought into it before spreading rumors, and maybe they will expect to be held accountable if they claim prophecy. It could transform religion as we know it.

    Non-profit not government. Not tyranny.

I was speaking of tyranny in a general sense.

I think we should have a secret service man... one on each block reporting everything they see and hear to those in authority. We should also have a a list of things we can say and can't say. Maybe even have Siri recording everything someone says.

Maybe, but this would be secured against tampering. It would only be keeping track of public addresses, things not copyrighted and so on. It wouldn't be like listening in someone's pub or kitchen.

Once something was put in it would be guaranteed not to change. Digitally signed. Objections could also be noted. If the service became untrustworthy that would also be on record, so it would at least be fair.

I think things are quite messed up. Every time I go into a church the minister finds 5 ways to talk down about other churches, and its like the people don't even notice it. Every time I hear a sermon online its the same. I want people to notice slander and start to object to it.

I never heard anything like this in any church. It's possibly more of a Protestant thing? They focus on preachers way more.

I won't say its only a protestant thing, but its certainly happening in many protestant churches. I've heard many people pretend to channel God and speak directly in the name of God, and no one has held them to task when what they have said turns out to be bunk. Instead its forgotten. You'd be surprised. Religious leaders are forgiven and not held to account for bald lies, even hurtful lies. They get away with it. You can hope its only protestant ones.

I certainly can agree with that position of not speaking about other churches. My sermons are about Jesus, not about other churches.

True story - .. (transparency) - it wasn't in a message at church but a personal event (my custom isn't to talk about churches anyways.) edited

Went to another church (special speaker) who at the end of the service said "I am now going to prophecy to each person hear tonight"... I looked at my wife and said "If he has that many prophetic words, I don't need to hear it" and we left.

We would travel on US192 quite often and every time I passed a church I told my wife, "THAT is the church where prophecies come a dime a dozen (or something along that line)" and then chuckle.

On one trip back home, I passed the same church and said the same thing and as if a voice was heard by my ears, I heard, "Are you his pastor?" I know God's voice and I also know that He already knew the answer.

    I replied "no sir".

He then spoke and said "Then who are you to criticize my son!".

From that moment forward, I keep a close watch on what I say about people and churches. God is the judge and not me!

Naw I enjoy the entertainment too much. If religion cleaned itself up it would be boring. I would have nothing to rage over!

Why are you singling out religious leaders as particularly noxious? I don't see any reason to think that religious congregations are worse than anywhere else.
