It mean that a woman/girl has to stay away from the family for 5 days.
The 15 years old girl has suffocated because the shed she had to stay in was poorly ventilated.

This is why I object to just blindly following tradition. Not all of the ancient traditions and cultural practices are benign little insights into our more primative bygone ways.
