Well Buddha didn't stand idly... He preached His Message as much as possible. Same with The original saints of Vaishnavism. Lord Caitanya Himself preached the Hare Krishna Mahamantra as much as possible, and ever since then, at least at the advent of Bhaktivinode Thakura, Gaudiya Vaishnavism has always been missionary in its zeal. Lord Caitanya wanted to spread the Mahamantra to every town and village! :p
 
I dont think they are like modern missionaires. Modern missionaires are the ones who go to poor parts of Africa and promise them food if they turn Christian or any other religion. Missionaires in that day were not looked down upon, i think they are looked down upon today, and i can see why.
