“Faith devoid of love resembles light devoid of warmth, which is what winter light is like. Faith combined with love resembles light combined with warmth, which is what the light of spring is like. It is known that everything grows and flourishes in spring’s light, and that everything droops and dies in winter’s light. The same holds true for faith and love. “

The word "love" means several distinct things. If you're talking about the sort of thing you might have for your spouse of thirty years, that's one thing. If you're talking about the sort of thing that affirms, not just your spouse, but all of life, the entire world, and "is all you need", then that's another thing.

You are quite correct.
The one of which this refers is your second choice.
