Los Angeles County this weekend surpassed 1 million COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic and reported its first case of the more contagious variant that was initially discovered in the United Kingdom last year.

On Saturday, the county recorded more than 14,000 cases and some 253 deaths and 7,597 hospitalizations, statistics from the country’s department of public health show.

The figures push Los Angeles to the top county in the nation in terms of COVID-19 cases, totaling more than the next two counties, Cook and Maricopa, combined.

Though California has been among the strictest states in the nation in implementing restrictions, it has continued to see a surge in cases in the past two weeks, averaging more than 41,000 new coronavirus cases each day

It's what happens when people wear masks improperly and especially will not stay apart.
On paper it may be strict. Enforcement and compliance are minimal. Even some gyms are open here.

I agree that all the laws, regulations, etc. in the world mean exactly diggly squat if they are not followed and enforced.

A big problem in the UK is the support for those that have to self-isolate, or actually catch COVID; because many of the less well off are the least well supported they will not go for tests; and they will keep on working BECAUSE THEY CANNOT AFFORD NOT TO.

Yes. And if that's true here in the UK, you can bet your proverbial it will be a far worse problem in the US, where there is much less social security assistance and no furlough scheme to keep people in their jobs while this blows over.

In the US, if you lose your job you often lose your medical insurance, which is part of your employment package. So there you are, out of work, with no health cover, in the middle of a raging epidemic!!

It sounds bad in California. Have they had lock-downs? What attempts have they made to reduce infections?
