Because the Bible was written by males in a backward, ignorant culture that treated women as little more than cattle. The bible reflects this by being an ignorant, backward text that treats women as little more than cattle.

Because they were more of an asset than women. Outside of satisfying sexual needs, making an edible pot of porridge, and weaving a decent tunic or two women were of little value to a society. And of these only one was pretty much exclusively theirs.
