A while back I posted this article to my Facebook, with the suggested revisionist theory that it might be the physical presence of Jormungandr - the Midgard Serpent.
Now, Jormungandr (traditionally) encircles the Earth, containing the world's oceans. Should this "iron serpent" be taken as Jormungandr, he is still somewhat containing Midgard in that the magnetic field generated by his movements might serve the same purpose.
