Indian Elections, world's largest democracy

There is an app from Election Commission of India which tells us the percentage of people who have voted in the election in each constituency and in each state. They give out 2-hour revisions. Helps the politically aware of what is happening in individual constituencies.

As for law and order, the news channels give prompt information.

23% vote in Kathua constituency in Jammu & Kashmir till 11 am. Hindu majority with 10% Muslims. High voting in W. Bengal constituencies - 35% where there is a keen contest between Narendra Modi' BJP and TMC's chief minister Mamta Bannerjee. Stone throwing has been reported in Cooch Behar.

In Mauritius, the sale of alcohol was banned on election day. That probably stopped those silly Hindus who came as indentured labour from throwing stones.

May India choose the right people so the growth can continue.

Here in India, alcohol is clandestinely provided free after voting and throwing stones as a reward. Officially, liquor sale is banned on election day.
However, the first phase passed of comparatively safely except for the death of a security person in an IED blast in Chhattisgarh.
Overall, 63% voting. just about the normal. Highest 80% in Tripura and lowest 48% in Bihar. Bihar low voting may hurt BJP.
Second phase poll on April 26 involving 13 states.

I came across this story in my newsfeed this morning:

Outrage in India after state-run TV channel changes logo color to orange

The new saffron logo has sparked outrage among opposition political parties which claim it was an attempt at “saffronising” the country and its important institutions.

The saffron colour has been associated with the ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which has adopted it as its official colour, using it in party flags, banners, scarfs and attire. The colour also holds religious significance among Hindus.

Another part of the article which struck me was this:

According to the World Press Freedom Index released in May last year, India’s ranking dropped to 150 out of 180 nations, from its last-year ranking of 142.

Has press freedom deteriorated that badly? A controlled and/or crooked media are the bane of any democracy.

On the other hand, if the people have internet access and the ability to find views and news from other sources/countries, then I don't suppose it could be that controlled.

Indian General Election, Phase II today, 13 states, 88 constituencies.

The Indian Supreme Court rejected all appeals against the way elections are held in India:
1. Voting by Electronic Voting Machines.
2. 100% check on paper slips vis-a-vis what Electronic Voting Machines show. At the moment 5% are checked as sample.
3. Voting by ballot papers.

It issued two directions and has suggested bar-coding on Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail slips (VVPAT).
Read about directions here: Supreme Court Rejects Pleas Seeking 100% EVM-VVPAT Cross Verification, Issues Directions To Seal Symbol Loading Unit

There is no outrage. Color change is not new. When the first color logo was accepted it was orange and blue.

Sure, in olden days, there were no fake videos, misinformation by AI/Robot generated articles and posts. A scrutiny is necessary. Foreign governments have meddled even in US elections (if you are from US). We have the same problem here with internet reaching 820 million (of the 1,428 million) people). All social media sites are open, strictures are put on some material which the government considers harmful. If any one differs then the person/organization can approach the courts.

Third Chapter of the long (six week) Seven-Chapter of Indian Election Mahabharata today. 11 states, 93 seats. Narendra Modi and Amit Shah (Home Minister, may be the next prime minister of India) vote. 40% voting till 1 p.m. Overall, 60% voting till 5 p.m. Phase 1 and II accounted for 190 seats. So, by today, it makes 283 constituencies, i.e., more than half (total being 543). Some violence in Bengal, but that was expected.

Fourth phase of Indian General Elections tomorrow (May 13): 10 states, 94 constituencies
That includes election in the Kashmir capital, Srinagar.

Assets of Yogi Aditya Nath
, Chief Minister of India's most populated state (Urrar Pradesh - pop. 257 million for the last 7 years) and Member of Indian Parliament for 24 years prior to that (IMHO, a possible Prime Minister of India at some later date): USD 114,882.26
He would not be able to buy any of our four apartments in Delhi.
This is the type of people who are with the ruling party in India. Corrupt people would have made billions in this time period.

Richest among the most important Triad of Bharatiya Janata Party is Home Minister, Amit Shah, who declared assets worth USD 4,826,935.
I have posted information about Modi's 2019 assets earlier. He is going to file for his candidacy from Varanasi on May 14. I will post his current assets as soon as I get the information.

In Contrast: Alamgir Alam, Congress legislator and Minister of Rural Development, Jharkhand state, with Sonia and Rahul Gandhi.
Recently, a hoard of money amounting to USD 4.19 million was found with the servant of one of his associates.
For such cases, investigating agencies have to bring in note counting machines.

SRINAGAR: The Srinagar constituency of Jammu and Kashmir voted on Monday to choose its next representative to the Lok Sabha — the first election there since the general election of 2019.

And the voting figure broke all records. In absence of any boycott call from separatists or fear of violence, 38 per cent people came out to vote — a first in 35 years and highest since 1989. Srinagar had recorded 14 per cent polling in the last general election.

Oh, PM Narendra Modi has grown richer in the last five years. His assets in 2019 stood at Rs. 2.51 crores (USD 3,006,000), today according to his affidavit in the application for the candidacy for a parliamentary seat, he has shown assets worth Rs. 3.02 crores (USD 3,617,000) of which Rs 52,920 (USD 634) is in cash. He does not own land, house, or car.
The affidavit further shows that PM Modi's taxable income doubled from Rs 1.1 million (USD 13175) in fiscal year 2018-19 to Rs 2.35 million (USD 28100) in 2022-23. His salary is fixed at Rs. 200,000 (USD 2,395) a month, so the increase must have come from rise in allowances because of price rise and interest from his fixed deposits.
PM Modi doesn't own house, car, has Rs 52,000 in cash: Election affidavit (Link contains the complete affidavit)
Hah, a poor country and a rich prime minister. But don't worry, some day he is going to donate all his money. :)

Fifth phase of polling today, 8 states, 49 seats, some 90 million people can vote. Just two more phases to go on May 25 and June 1.
Sizzling temperatures, 118 F very close to New Delhi. The elections should have been held in March/April and not in April/May.
Farooq Abdullah in Kashmir, Rahul Gandhi and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh in Uttar Pradesh in the fray today.

Fifth phase ends. Maharshtra (Mumbai) percentage lowest 49% (in spite of six parties, three on one side and three on the other). Percentage better in East, Bengal (Kolkata) tops with 73%. Ladakh high 67%, Jammu & Kashmir a respectable 55%. No guesses, wait for June 4th when the results come. Next phase (which includes Delhi) on May 25.
Kargil, a part of Jammu & Kashmir recorded 74% voting.

Note to what I wrote in my post #13.
Elections in March/April. The mountainous regions may be under snow, the election there can be in May. The rest of country can vote in March.
That way we will avoid extreme heat that we have now. Election won't be held all over India on the same day. We vote in phases.

In another half an hour, political canvassing all over India will cease, though house to house visit are permitted. Modi has held 80 interviews and 200 rallies and public lectures. He surely needs a break. After the 2019 election, he went to a cave in Kedarnath in Himalayas. This time he is going to the Southern tip of India, KanyaKumari, to meditate in seclusion at the Vivekananda Rock Memorial surrounded by sea on three sides (with Indian landmass in the north) for the next 45 hours. The voting for the last and seventh phase will be on June 1 in 8 states and 57 constituencies. He will be back on June 1 for feedback on elections. Results, as perhaps you know, on June 4.

p.s. - Noon Temperature in Delhi 50 C (122 F), feeling like 55 C. So too in many parts of India. Do not need fire or flame to cook eggs.
I do not blame people for low voting percentage.

How do we vote in India:

Two things are necessary. 1. That our name should be in the list, and 2. we need to have an photo-bearing identity card. It could be Adhaar card (National identity card, most common), a Pin Card (Income Tax) or driving license, etc.

The party agents give us a slip which has our name and number on the voting list. We present the slip and the identity card to the first polling officer. He/she announces our name. Party agents can raise objections for our identity, if any. Otherwise we pass on the to the next polling officer who puts an indelible ink mark on the first finger of the left hand. Then we go to the third polling officer, who preserves our slip with him, and asks us to enter the voting area. There are two machines. 1. Electronic voting machine, and 2. a connected VVPAT mkachine (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail). The electronic voting machine has names of the party and their symbols. We can press the button of our choice. The VVPAT machine records our vote on paper.
After the election is over, it is mandatory that 5% of the total VVPAT slips will be checked with the slips retained by the third polling officer.

We went around 1 pm. It was hot (47 C) but we were going in the air-conditioned car which belongs to my daughter-in-law, so heat was not a problem. The distance of the polling station was less than a mile from our home. We did face sun's heat when we walked from the car to the polling booth, say over a distance of some 600 feet. Since my wife and myself are above 75 years of age, we did not need to stand in the queue and were directly ushered in the polling room. My daughter-in-law had to stand in the queue. Not very long, just about 20 people. It took her about 10 minutes to vote and come out. Polling station is a nice place to meet neighbors. We met our family from our old neighborhood, which is not far from our place. These, then were three more votes for the candidate of PM Modi's party. I knew the name of the candidate, a woman, but that is really irrelevant for voting in India. People vote for the party.

Mr Modi will win...only question by how much.?
The other question is with no offspring there is no personal corruption.Who would Mr Modi leave it to?

That will all change when BJP eventually replaces him with someone.Who has kids.
