Just watched this movie. I am irritated that every single woman in it was raped and / or killed. I just wanted to share my irritation.

Ok, so one woman just got punched, but she was kind of a prop. She didn't have any lines, she was just a cannibal's girlfriend or sister or something. So all but one of the female characters was raped and / or murdered.

Sounds like a book i read not long ago, what makes it even sadder was that it was a supposed to be a darker re-telling of the peter pan story where an army of children fight against a group of zombie pirates, how do **** that up? Well you start by having every female who makes an appearance be a victim of rape or attempted rape and the only woman who isn't gets stabbed to death in her sleep while recovering from a bad injury And she was the only character in the whole book i liked. Not to mention she only died because the main character was too busy saving some pixies from some spiders to notice.

Hell the book started out with a girl getting raped by her father and this is a ten year old girl who's only contribution is window dressing.

The only other female characters are a witch who tries to seduce a ten year old boy and "the lady of the lake" who spends most of the story in a zoned zombie like trance.

God i hate that book.

/rant

Edit: in case anyone's interested the book is called child thief but i don't recommend it, not unless you wanna burst an aneurism from anger reading it.

See? That ****** me off too. Thanks for the warning - I'll avoid the book. There's a certain type of film where the instant you see a woman you just know something awful is going to happen to her. And of course she'll always suck at defending herself, and the attacker will always be a creepy stranger, and the story isn't even about her, but about some man who cares about her.

I like action films, but I'm so sick of watching women getting raped, killed, menaced or beaten all the time.

as am I. It's unfortunately a common trope in stories, particularly in those mediums aimed at the male demographic, which let's face it most are, where a woman is present and has bad things happen to her for the sole purpose of providing motivation for the male lead or just to show off how bad *** the male lead is. It happens all the time in comics. That's why in the comics I want to write I'm going to turn the trope on it's head by having the woman the dashing young hero comes to rescue actually be the bad guy and her attacker be another woman who would have succeeded in capturing her were it not for his bone-headed look before you leap interference:p And to make matters worse for him they are both demi-gods:D

I do love turning tropes inside out and giving them a good spanking:flirt:

though on a more serious note I do think that is the best way to combat them aside from criticizing them when they show up, do your best to avoid and/or turn them on their head in your own work while supporting those who do the same. Though I do wish there was more we could do, one of the reasons why it's so hard for me to get into most books is because they keep on pulling tropes like this which disgust me.

*sigh* I really should just go back to reading mists of avalon and wicked, those books actually have competent female leads and don't throw me into catatonic fits of rage every time I try to read them.

The one where some people are trapped inside an elevator with the Devil?

Also, I too recognize this crazy sort of "trope" with dispensable women. In fact, there a a girl on YouTube who talks at great length about stuff like this. If I remember correctly her YouTube name is "feministfrequency". Anita something-or-other. You might like her stuff.

Yeah, is that the "tropes vs. women" series? I like her.

This movie was a Korean thing. Everything that sucks about Hollywood films and women sucks twice as hard in most Asian films. :p

Yeah that's her.

Really? I thought Hollywood was the toilet of international movie industries.
Looks like some tropes are just global.

Those were good books. Wheel of time isn't too bad, and game of thrones is great when it comes to female characters. Disc world is also good - particularly the ones featuring witches.

I'm challenging the myth that historical Canadian women had uninteresting lives with my work right now. :)

I hadn't heard of this movie, and after watching the trailer and reading the review of it here, I'm not sure I want to see it.

Apparently "I Spit on Your Grave" was re-made a few years ago. It's another film in the torture porn sub-genre of horror, and it tells the story of a woman who tortures and kills a group of men who brutally assaulted her, raped her repeatedly, and then attempted to kill her and left her for dead. The woman then hunts down the men one by one and brutalizes them and murders them as her revenge. It originally was made back in 1979, and I remember thinking to myself back when I was into horror flicks how I'd rather not watch the film.

Watching the re-made film trailer, it's "Saw" and "Hostel" but with a cookie-cutter model female who has her victims chained up so she can snip and slice to her hearts content. I have no desire to see it, and mostly because I don't want to entertain the notion that if a woman is raped, the only remedy is payback that will offer any justice or peace of mind.

Don't get me wrong, revenge flicks can be totally awesome. "Kill Bill" volumes 1 & 2 are among my favorites ever ever ever. :D

But the trope of the disposable helpless female is tiresome.

I remember when the horror genre was about fright, flight and terror rather than sadism, torture and snuff.

Also, a desire for revenge is natural and there is nothing wrong with finding the notion satisfying depending on context and circumstances. Vengeance can be cast in the light of justice, empowerment, and reclamation.
