    Hi Rabbi :)!

    I’m an Orthodox Jew.
Although I have studied major works on Jewish thought in the past my brain has kind of atrophied over the past couple of years.
One of my goals for the next while is to study Jewish thought, Chassidus, Mussar and maybe a little bit of Kabbalah within the context of Jewish history.

I know I probably won’t be able to do all that, but I’m hoping to get somewhere with it.

    We’ll see.

    Hi!
    Yes, I use Sefaria.
I’m interested in learning more about the Chassidic movement and how it started - which concepts in particular were brought to the forefront of Chassidic Jewish life. There are many lectures on this, but since I understand that the Toldos Yaakov Yosef was the first significant Chassidic work, I wanted to see for myself.
There is no English translation of the Toldos Yaakov Yosef on Sefaria.

I know you want to read books and I hear you. However, this video I found very helpful in understanding the culture surrounding the emergence of Chassidut. Rabbi Pini Dunner is very entertaining, too.

    Thank you so much!
I always appreciate a good recommendation.
I hope to watch this later.

He has an awesome one on Rebbe Nachman, but I know Breslov isn't everyone's cup of tea :D

Belated welcome (I wasn't here for about a month)!

There used to be non-Jewish member here who was very interested in the writings of the R' Yaakov Yosef of Polne'ah and was disappointed that not enough of his writings had been translated into English. Perhaps one of his posts is what drew you here?

Anyway, enjoy RF, and if you're interested, the site has a private area for Jewish members (besides for the Judaism DIR). If you want to join, just send a request to one of the admins.

    1) We have some fine members who identify as Orthodox. I’m one of the fine members who do not. If you are looking for strictly Orthodox perspectives you can turn in confidence to @rosends who is an Orthodox rabbi and @Harel13 .
    2) If your brain has atrophied at 30, I’m in big trouble. It’s been more than 40 years since I last saw 30.
    3) A worthy goal.
    4) You can do it. Just remember to be realistic in your time frames.
