He is there to create moral balance, so that we can define "good" by contrasting it with something else (evil)
I don't think so. Man gave Satan his authority and Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil (hardly working together).

It has to do with the type of emotional impact they have on you. A satanic being will try to inflate the ego with an exaggerated feeling. This is easy to see if it is fear. However, inflated desire or pride can feel satisfying, causing one to accept the negative being as beneficial. The ends justifying the means is an ego inflation that call allow one to justify the dark side.
Heavenly beings tend to induce more subtle feeling tones, that do not inflate the ego. Lower level emotional impact allows reason to remain conscious, so compulsion is less likely. One can better control the dark side triggers, which may simultaneously whisper in your other ear.
This all stems from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, which is symbolic of law. Law, is like the symbolic tree of knowledge of good and evil, in that it defines reality into good and evil and then enforces the induced perception of reality with a carrot and stick.
The problem with law is it is not natural to the brain. When the brain writes to memory it adds emotional tags. Our memory has both emotional valance and sensory content. This is useful to the animal since when memory is trigger by similar situations, he can react to the feeling, without having to think. If the odd food object that induces memory, feels good, they will eat.
The problem with law is that good and evil creates conflicting feelings; calm and fear. To know both sides of the law, part of our memory rewriting process will induce conflicting feelings. Picture the animal looking at the odd food and feeling both fear and desire at the same time. He would freeze not knowing what to do. The brain deals with this conflict, by making half of the two sided law memory unconscious. This is the dark side in most people since it is taught to you by the law. Law becomes like a two sided coin, with only one side conscious at a time. Most of us feel we are good people. The other side is hidden from view; unconscious, but it is implied by the nature of that one thing with two sides. The result is an imposed glitch in the natural operating system of the brain. The world is not polarized except by the glitch.
The consolidation of the dark side of every law you have even learned, from moral, to civil, to sports to PC forms a dynamic subroutine called Satan; hidden side of the coin of law. The dark side spirits or data output from the hidden subroutine, tends to make use of the stronger emotions associated with the dark side of law. This is the tell for satanic spirits.
The natural animal can feel all feelings from love to hate, with none repressed. These tags will all be used, singly, for specific situations. There is no conflicting feelings env with fear and hate. It is morally neutral. Law created a conflict in the operating system of the brain, that should not be there. Once there; original sin, secondary neural affects begin to occur, which are often projected into autonomous entities of good and evil. One can tell by the emotional valance associate with each side of the two sided coin. They are real but more software based. Jesus did away with law to help heal the conflict in the brain's operating system. We should not have conflicting feelings and the unconscious need to repress.

I think there are a few steps that can be used to ascertain the nature of beings.
1. Know Thyself.
2. Know what God wants.
3. Know the intention the being before you.
It doesn't matter if Satan is an angel who originally came from heaven. What matters is what he intends. Identifying the intention gives you the information you need.2. Know what God wants.

There are other methods by which beings can be known.
There is the question method which goes something like this:
1. What is your name?
2. Where are you coming from?
3. Where are you going to?
Destination reveals intention.2. Where are you coming from?

The worry: that you will be deceived by trusting a being you should not trust.
There's a problem with that frame of mind, that you are creating the encounter you envision in your mind. So there is also the creation method or the Seek and You Shall Find method:
1. Envision the kind of beings you want to encounter.
2. Seek those beings.
3. Affirm the nature of what you desire in the encounter.
By seeking out beings that you can trust, you are able to discern between the various beings you encounter. You recognize the one you are looking for because the nature of the one you are looking for matches your seeking.2. Seek those beings.

If you hold within yourself the higher spiritual intention, this makes all the difference, because you will be brought into harmony with the higher spiritual intention and other beings working in the same purpose.

Of course it's rarely that simple. The devil can be very subtle. So he may actually agree with that scripture for the moment but one thing is for sure ... he'll disagree eventually. So you have to focus on the consistency of the spirit. He'll agree with you and then contradict later on. That's how the devil does it.
