Heaven, Paved With Gold

NeoSeeker

Searching Low & High
If you want to get an idea of problem with human beings describing the divine, take a quick look at Revelation 21 and a description of a city from heaven made up of jewels and gold. While jewels and gold could be metaphors for the indescribable value of heaven and may have a great impact on the faithful, I find this description to be demeaning to what I describe as "good values". Value should be applied to human character, not dreaming of surrounding ourselves with physical wealth especially in a spiritual setting. This is a good example of why those seeking spiritual truth should regard ancient religious scripts with skepticism.

18The wall is built of jasper, while the city is pure gold, clear as glass. 19The foundations of the wall of the city are adorned with every jewel; the first was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, 20the fifth onyx, the sixth cornelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst. 21And the twelve gates are twelve pearls, each of the gates is a single pearl, and the street of the city is pure gold, transparent as glass.

Lol, there's a city like that on Earth, it's called the Vatican. The gold is just on the inside............

To me , its kind of a common sense thing.

If you asked someone to make up a place that was perfect back then, this would be your answer. ( kind of like the 70 virgins thing). The obvious over the top describing of the place should give you a big clue as to if it is really out there

reminds me of a joke

When Osama bin Laden died, he was met at the pearly gates
by George Washington, who slapped him across the face and
yelled: "How dare you try to destroy the nation I helped conceive!"

Patrick Henry approached, punched him in the nose and
shouted: "You wanted to end our liberties but you failed."

James Madison followed, kicked him in the groin and said:
"This is why I allowed our government to provide for the
common defense!"

Thomas Jefferson was next, beat Osama with a long cane
and snarled: "It was evil men like you who inspired me to
write the Declaration of Independence."

The beatings and thrashing continued as George Mason,
James Monroe and 64 other early Americans unleashed
their anger on the terrorist leader.

As Osama lay bleeding and in pain, an angel appeared.
Bin Laden wept and said: "This is not what you promised me."

The angel replied: "I told you there would be 70 Virginians waiting for
you in Heaven. Not 70 virgins!

In light of Wallstreet and our Bank industry today I see it being as much of a dream today. ;) Good joke! :)

Gold is a terrible material for pavement. Titanium or aluminium would be far more suitable.

Or puffy clouds, less wear and tear. ;)

I suppose the propspect of eternal non-existence just might be more exciting than your life right now.

No, my life isn't boring because I am on the front lines of the war against good and evil, God and satan. Matter of fact it is exciting and terrifying and I have to take a break for a few days at times because it is so overwhelming. I am God's representative as I walk into hospital rooms where someone has days to live and the family is sitting around looking to me to do or say something to help out. What I say or do will live on with the survivors and could influence them to grow closer to God or further away. It is a huge responsibility and is not boring. I have to search and agonize on what to say, will it be the right thing.

I am on the front lines as I see people either reject or accept God’s plan of salvation. I’ve had doors shut in my face and I have had people break down right in front of me weeping, it’s not boring. I knock on strangers doors to present the gospel not knowing what I will encounter, it’s certainly not boring. I have to deal with my own fears and weaknesses and get past them to keep on going. I am in church meetings where half the church wants one thing and the other half wants something else and it could break up the church, it’s not boring. I talk to people about their eternal souls, it’s not boring. What is boring is talking about football or the weather.

Of all the things in the Bible, the description of heaven in Revelation seems to be the least of our worries.

[.... and on a side note, the vast majority of the Vatican's wealth is not in gold, but in priceless art, statues, and literature]

You'd think getting around all of Heaven on just one street would be an eternal traffic jam regardless of paving material, but I guess that's where the wings come in.
