John 12:25 ►
Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternity.
That Scripture makes me feel like I'm doing something right
It's an intriguing verse. It undoubtedly inspires people to hate their lives.

A Christian can correct me if I'm wrong, but I see this as meant to be interpreted as, "Don't become complacent in the now (in temporal existence), but strive for eternal salvation."
But like many things in scripture, taken literally, it can be taken in a completely different direction.

It should inspire people to realize how fleeting this mortal world is compared to eternal life. I think it means we must die to this world. If you are living according to this scripture you are indeed doing something right. Sadly, I do not think this scripture inspires very many people, since most people live for the material world and all it has to offer. They seem to think they can worship this life and also gain eternal life, but not according to Jesus.John 12:25 ►

I agree that is what it means. However, I do not think many people take it seriously. If they did, this world would be wholly different than it is. People would live for God and not for self. The world would be a paradise.@SalixIncendium Is more or less correct in his interpretation.
It's a warning to not be obsessed with money, objects, or other pleasures of the flesh. Because when you die you lose all these things anyways.
I wouldn't want to live that way. It takes a pretty sorry person to write something like that. It's author doesn't sound like a very happy person.John 12:25 ►

Matthew 16:23-26 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men. Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?A better translation is “he who hates his soul”. The soul is the “dust from the ground” (Genesis 2:7). It is referring to the flesh. It is kind of like people wanting to hold on to their flesh and by being “raptured”. “Everyone will die for his own iniquity” (Jeremiah 31;30), people need to get with the program. Believing what is not true in order to save their soul, will wind up with them losing that soul in the end. While everyone dies, not everyone shall keep their soul in the end. (John 12:25)
New American Standard Bible John 12:25
"He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal.

In context, the way I interpret those verses is that Jesus was telling the disciples to deny their selfish desires, things they want that are not of God, and to follow Him. For whoever will live for self shall lose his life, but whoever will sacrifice his life for the sake of Jesus and God shall gain eternal life. It is the soul that gets eternal life, not the body.
So if we live for self and the worldly things we gain the world but we lose our soul in the sense that we lose eternal life.
Thanks, I was never a Christian so I do not know the Bible very well. I just have a few favorite verses. It seems to me that Jesus was saying that His Cause was more important even than family. His was indeed a very important Cause. The “little ones” of Matthew 10:42 are those who have turned away from, and have become “enemies” with their own household, and therefore bear their own cross. They have turned away from the traditions of the fathers (Jeremiah 16:19), because those traditions are “nothing but falsehoods”, and have become estranged with their family and their established religious traditions. As for following Yeshua, he said to become “complete” /"perfect" ,one must sell their possessions and follow Me (Matthew 19:21), a cross which most would not be willing to contemplate, much less bear. And that would only be the start of that road.
Matthew 10:35“ For I came to SET A MAN AGAINST HIS FATHER, AND A DAUGHTER AGAINST HER MOTHER, AND A DAUGHTER-IN-LAW AGAINST HER MOTHER-IN-LAW; 36and A MAN’S ENEMIES WILL BE THE MEMBERS OF HIS HOUSEHOLD. 37“He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38“And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39“He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it.
Psyche means self, not life, which would be Zoe in Greek; thus it is a terrible translation by many.Any thoughts?
