Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

nutshell said:
My wife and I saw "Tim Burton's Corpse Bride" the other day (loved it!), and before the movie they showed a trailer for the upcoming Harry Potter movie. I admit I love Harry Potter and am really looking forward to the movie.

I have two questions:

For the Christians: Do you believe reading/watching Harry Potter can have a negative effect on a Christian and if so, why do you believe this?

For the Wiccans: How does Harry Potter affect teaching others about your beliefs? Does it help or hinder?
Well, Harry Potter is a spoof, a nonreal reality, fun to watch for kids, but not without some degree of processing with adults (who aren't themselves emotionally immature or believe that projected images of fiction actually do some good, other than "ooow... ahhhh, cool man" stuff); it lends itself to one thing... and that one thing is? Starts with an "m", no, not masochism, although that's true... it's MONEY. Harry makes Money! And money is the source of what people? Wiccans, stay out of it.

Thank you for that lucid post.

It also lends itself to the enjoyment of great writing and characterization, and lends itself to kids who previously had hated reading learning to enjoy and then crave it. (I worked in a PMIC for three years, and it was the excitement over the books that those kids, especially the ones who'd, before this, weren't able to concentrate on anything other than Pokemon, that got me into the series.

Also, I believe the love of money is what you're referring to. If Wiccans may have to stay out of it, then we rowdy Pagans are very happy to contribute. ;)

I wasn't referring to books. Since when do pagans read? )(

Money is the source of nothing. However, if you are pulling for a scripture, then it's the LOVE of money that is the root of many evils (not all). Money can be used for either good or evil, just as most things in this life.

So "you" say... And no, I wasn't pulling from anywhere. Kids... And as a matter of fact. What is money? Go ahead, entertain me! Or us. Wiccans, still, quiet, still and quiet... doesn't fit, must not be broken.

John, I think we may be misunderstanding one another. I hope this is taken in the spirit it was intended- as a way to help us communicate- is English your first language?

No,
God said it:

I Timothy 6:6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9 People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. NIV

Never blame an inanimate object for someone's sin.

(BTW, this is my altime favorite passage (6:6) )

Oh yeah, you're right, far right.

Let me go find my Strong's Concordance... Man, what are these pressed leaves doin' in here?

Tit 1:11," ... whose open mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake." KJV

well, the idea is there, as always...

Anyways, 1 Tim 6:10 (from the "only" truly authentic words of God, and the church fathers and old dead folks) um, "For the love of money is the root of "all" evil". KJV

Ahhh, take in a big breath of fresh air. If you can... Now, breathe out a blessing to all those poor souls watching Harry What's His Name...

I'm failing more and more to understand what money or a verse from a book that many Wiccans/ Pagans do not consider relevant to their religion (Although many of us have studied it- noting that I, as well as NetDoc, pointed out the more commonly referred to translation)
has to do with the original post or the topic at hand, as we are discussing the literary and spirtual ramifications of the series.

Ya can't eat a bible sandwich. Well, you can't, or shouldn't without first consulting a good chef. Good thing I only think in parts, or I'd say excuse my holy ... What? Babble was my first language.

I've known so many women who were into playing with tarot cards and magic around the age of 12 or so, that I almost believe it must be a rite of passage for females.
Oh I dunno about that I am 21 now and still going strong :D
