I had an AMF Police Special a number of years back but had a lot of problems with it, beautiful bike but I'd rather spend more time riding one than working on one. I think a lot of the problems came from the fact when AMF screwed things up and that I bought it from a retired police officer who used it only to escort funerals. My guess is that it was ridden infrequently and in low gear for a number of years, causes problems eventually but that is just my half-***** guess. sold it and bought a full dress Honda Goldwing, it has never left me stranded.
If I weld a metal scoop on the front of my bike, I can scoop up the parts that fall off of some fellow riders bikes in my group, they don't seem to like that joke very much but it seems very practical to me.

When I had V&H open pipes on my bike bits rattled off it to beat the band. I put the OEM mufflers back on and bits stopped falling off straight away.

I learnt something really useful today. I found out that air shocks from the touring models will bolt straight onto a Sportster with the addition of just a few washers to clear the belt guard on the RHS.
I've got a pair of brand new 13" take offs and a hand pump coming to me from ebay. Can't wait to try them.

You're spot on. I took them off. (I had V&H straight shots but they were LOUD!)
Bits kept rattling off and they were driving me nuts.

Sweet looking bike, stephen. You don't know how hard it's been for me to be financially responsible and not get a bike this year.

Mile for mile, operating costs for most bikes are lower than most cars, Ringer, and, surprisingly, Harley's get better mileage than most other comparable bikes.
Considering the gas prices these days, it might be financially responsible to get a bike.

right nowin this economy it is the best time to have a motorcycle cost les in gas but it would bit if ur out in the rain and yes the police special bikes are usally junk when they sell them

Between my studen loans, auto loan, and trying to save up for my first house in this down economy, I don't think it would be wise for me to add more debt for an item I can do without. Then again, you only live once so why not?

Anyone have any opinions about the 2010 bikes?

If I had the money I'd have one of the new Dyna Wide Glides. I think this is the best looking bike off the shelf I've ever seen.

I agree the wide-glides are good looking bikes, but they've never been known for their ergonomics, especially on long trips.
I like the internally wired controls, but some of the other features are problematic, ie:
Spoked wheels -- inconvenient and potentially dangerous on a MC.
Speedo on the tank -- can't see it without glancing down, way down if you have a full-face helmet, and a tach would be nice as well.
The fairly small tank necessitates fairly frequent stops for petrol, especially on long trips, though with the bike's ergonomics you might want to get off for a stretch anyway.
I'm also skeptical about the passenger accommodations. It's only got 4.2 inches of ground clearance. You'd also (well, your passenger) would want a more substantial pillion pad and a proper back rest.

That's a slick-looking little bag on your Sportie, Stephen, but it liiks suspiciously like a pistol holster....:sarcastic

I suppose you do have to keep an eye on them but I have to say I really like spoked wheels. I have them on my sportie. I think the black rims on this look fab. Making me think about painting my own rims hmmmm.

Good point. I've never ridden a big twin, I'll have to try and bag a test ride at one of the rallies next year and see

Indeed I don't think this would be the machine for an Iron Butt.

I agree about the sissy bar. I don't like the spindly looking one it comes with. One other bit I really don't like is the taillight on the Euro spec bikes. Apparently the US bikes have the stop lights incorporated in the indicators. I like that idea a lot. Make for a really clean tail. If I ever got one I'd be straight ion E bay for those US spec indicators.

haha - Now you mention it. Next time someone cuts me up I'll look menacingly at my bag and them to see if I get a reaction

The new Fat Boy is a nice looking bike too. But I can't imagine wanting to own a Fat Boy. I think they're cool but they're a bit I dunno, too showy or something.
