I've looked it up online, I sola scripgoogled it, and all of that. My silly brain can't get it. So, I'm getting my degree and this assignment is tripping me up.

What is a good definition of technology?

The assignment says: to examine the effects technology has on digital media.

Digital media is an example of technology. Technology defines specific type media such as internet, cell phones, and TVs.

Technology is a branch of science that deals with computers and gadgets, and mechanics, mechatronics, robotics, and digital crafts and productions.

Digital means that, anything that could be viewed or accessed by gadgets or electronic equipment. For example: Photo stored in computer, is in digital form.

Watch I get it and I look silly!

Technology is the tools that enhance our abilities. Even the pen and paper are a facet of technology, as is the wheel. Atlatl to ICBM, papyrus scrolls to digit libraries, technology is a pretty broad term.

My guess is that they want you to talk about how better tech has affected digital information and perhaps how new kinds of digital media such as usb drives, bluetooth, firewire, usb1/2/3 with ever increasing speeds have affected digital information.

Or maybe they want you to talk about developments in CD's, CD roms and other storage mediums. You know first there was the tape drive...then the magnetic spinning disc then the floppy drive...then the 5.25" floppy then the 3.5" floppy then the zip disc and CD-Rom then the DVD-Rom then the USB thumdrives appeared...

Or maybe they want you to decide whether new media technology always results in improved media. In that case no, because VHS wins over Betamax.

A simple, straightforward definition of technology is that it's the application of science.

I would guess speed, ease and breadth of access improvements.
Could be you concentrate on one medium (or a few) or discuss the whole digital age as it relates to the assignment

Technology : the application of science and engineering knowledge for practical purposes.

    Hi

Years ago I did a course and lesson one was this very same question. "What is the definition of technology". The university had found over one hundred different answers. They settled on one which became the foundation of the course,

"Technology is the application of scientific and other knowledge to problems involving people and machines".

By "other knowledge" such subjects as craft skills and managerial know how were among those included.

You are quite right to be puzzled. This question has kept quite a few very bright people occupied. Good luck with your studies.

If that is literally all it says and you don’t have access to a tutor or professor to clarify I’d suggest transferring to a better educational institution.

Clearly the key terms in the question require some kind of context but even just the subject or your degree and the specific course provide some of that. I still can’t believe that such an open-ended question would be presented without any further context at all though.

We have our textbooks, resources, student/student and student/teacher interaction. Since it's online, we have a good home site that people taking classes around the states have access to. I talk with our a lot of our students on our school facebook page. I ran it by them too.

The assignment has more context and chapter readings. Outside of that, I honestly don't know the content of the question to know how to use the material I'm reading.

Kinda of like you need to know the ABCs before you can read all the books they give you.

I finally figured out what direction I should go, when I studied the revelations of the Baha'i faith
I had that problem in college.

So just ask the professor who gave you the assignment. They’ll know what was intended by the question, anyone here can only guess.

Perhaps a look at how things like smart phones (being mobile and as much computer as anything we had before) have changed how we deal with digital information, along with streaming services (less use of TV), social media sites (almost universal use including children), and image-morphing technology (such that we cannot entirely trust what we see). Would any of these be relevant?

Yes. I wanted to hear insight rather than answers. It's part of a bigger final project so the more insight the better. The assignment is too complicated for one post answers.

Yeah. Thanks. There are hundreds of studies on the word communication alone. It's worth the three page essay we are working towards later.

Yes. I think I got it.

Technology effects digital media by using as a tool to improve daily life via faster transmission of information and flexibility and convenience. For example, internet helps with....

If that makes sense I'll run with this.
