EU Common Fisheries Policy sinks its teeth into Guernsey

Ultimatum

Classical Liberal
Christopher Booker has written about a very sad state of affairs within Guernsey--one of the Channel islands--courtesy a-la Europhile George Eustice (henceforth George EUstice).

Guernsey is a Crown Dependecy and is, therefore, not a member of the EU by its own choice. But then, we can't blame them for staying out of the political union--the CFP would utterly destroy the livelihoods and lifeblood of this little island. Or so they thought..
If you are well-informed, you will know that the EU imposed a massive cut in the allowable quota for skate and ray this year. Obviously, that's bad news for the UK, but for Guernsey it wasn't a problem at all! After all, as a state independent from political union, Guernsey is able to run and sustain its own fishing policy.
Because of this drastic cut, and as a means to increase the supply of skate and ray in our waters, the United Kingdom extended this restriction to Guernsey--where the CFP doesn't apply. George EUstice, fishing minister, also banned Guernsey boats from fishing within UK and EU waters.

And here we have an example of the cruel and disgusting effect of the CFP.

You should be aiming your ire at the UK Government, not the EU or the CFP.

Good news for the skate and rays though

You're right! But had the CFP never constrained our fishing industry, we would be able to run our own responsible and sustainable fishing policy.
Had the CFP never constrained our fishing industry, our relationship with Guernsey's fishing industry would not have gotten this bad.

Indeed! Bad news for our relationship with a Channel island though...

I think the real question you should be asking yourself is: How much are the fishermen making? And, also importantly, how many of these fishermen are tax-evaders?
Perhaps the question you should be asking is, "Why should Guernsey fishermen be able to ignore quotas in EU waters but English fishermen have to obey them?"
As an angler I am very pro-quotas and if anything in most cases they should be stricter.

Because they have reciprocal arrangements by which British and French boats can fish in their waters, and Bailiwick boats can fish outside them, under UK licences.
Their 147 fishing boats aren't subject to the EU's quota system--but manage their own fishing policy.
