Well, I'm an ex-smoker and I agree with the ban. More to the point, I agreed with the ban when I was a smoker, too. (It hasn't been that long since I managed to quit). Smokers absolutely have a right to poison themselves, but nobody has the right to poison other people, and that's precisely what smokers are demanding if they demand the right to smoke in enclosed public spaces.

i smoke at the moment, and i agree with the ban.

i smoked about 7 a day for about a year and a half, then i quit.... i started smoking again at uni because of the amount of other people who smoke in the pub and offer me one.

i won't have any real difficulty quitting again, and in the long run this ban is for the best.

I'm not in England, but I opposed bans on smoking in restaurants here in the state of Georgia and that doesn't even include smoking outside. Where exactly will you guys be allowed to smoke???

Outside only (with a few small exceptions). Pretty much anywhere outside, though, except, to my knowledge, in the doorways of the buildings where you won't be allowed to smoke.

My views exactly. I smoked 40 a day for nigh on 30 years; I quit twelve or so years ago. For the last few years, when we had children, I only ever somoked in the garden.......(not too nice when it was raining):foot:

I think it is hight time. If only people were aware of the danger in which they are puting bar staff in by smoking all over them, they would be ashamed.

What frustrates me is that when I started smoking, no one knew there was any danger; now, no one should be unaware.

I am not a smoker never have been! I agree with the ban, and I dont see why smokers dont like it - its not like we are banning smoking fullstop! Just in places, where their smoke can harm others! Its this silly idea that smoking is sociable and if you take out the smoking you cant be sociable! Well I dont smoke or drink and I can still go out and have a good time and be sociable! I mean the idea that bingo halls are having to close is ridicululous! I thought they went to play bingo! What the smoking got to do with it!

I have a very high risk of lung cancer. My Great Grandma and 9siblings all died of it (from smoking) and docs said if I ever smoked I would get it. Passive smoking is just as bad for me too!

I had to quit my job as a barmaid when I was at school, as it was giving me the most awful cough you have ever heard! My friends called it the smokers cough and we turned into a laugh as I was the only one in the class that DIDNT smoke, yet people always thought I did because of my cough!!!

You don't have to be a smoker to be against this law. All it takes is some appreciation for property rights.

I never smoke in public places, bars, restaurants, streets &c. I hate it when people smoke when I'm eating. Still, I cannot be in favor of this kind of prohibition.

I think businesses should have the right to choose what happens in their establishments, just as people have a right to work or not work somewhere. The government has no right to dictate to private companies who they can have in their place or business, nor should they dictate what can be done there if it isn't an illegal activity.

If the government wishes to ban smoking, ban it in government buildings. Ban it in public places paid for by tax dollars with designated smoking areas. Like the "Mormon Zoo" as we call it. (No offense my LDS friends) The Salt Lake City Airport has glassed off rooms where people can smoke and not have it bug the other people who don't like it. You can sit there and watch them through the glass.... thus, the Mormon Zoo. (no offense, I find it great and funny in my own twisted way)

Private businesses should be able to choose if they allow smoking, a smoking and non-smoking area, or all non-smoking. The government has no right to dictate such a thing. Places used to have smoking and non-smoking. Hotels/Motels and airlines with long flights still offer such a choice. What gives the government the right to just ban a legal activity?

If it is a smoking establishment and you don't like smoke, DON'T GO THERE! As for public places, they are just that: PUBLIC- FOR ALL! Put up areas for no smoking and areas for smoking to make it fair to all. A ban is ridiculous! That is like telling the owner of an All-Atheist shop they must sell Bibles, the owner of a hiking boot store they must put in wheel-chair access ramps, the owner of a pornography store that they must have an area for children!!!!!!!!!!! Absolutely absurd! Some people have no business being or doing what they do in certain places, but the government has no right to dictate such a thing to private businesses!

The problem with your argument is, is allowing smokers to smoke in public places is taking away the rights of non-smokers! Most public places are filled with smoke. I love going for a pub lunch - are you telling me I shouldnt be the one to go? That is taking away my right to chose where I want to eat. The ban doesnt take away the right for smokers to smoke, just a lmitation thats all!!!

You must never have been to England then!!!!! Smoking areas and Non smoking areas arent excactly protecting the non smokers from smoke! Its one room, one end smokers, one end non smokers! And smoke travels!!!! :)

Why should we die just because they want to kill themselves! Its pure selfishness!!!! And your examples of bibles in stores etc, that doesnt effect anyone else, that is a shop purely for atheists - so people who believe in God may chose not to go there. A restaurant is for ALL to eat in!!! EVERY restaurant at the moment is full of smoke unless it has a no-smoking policy!!! Smoking effects EVERYONE, not just those that smoke!!!

That's why establishments should be allowed to choose whether or not have allow smoking or not. It doesn't need to be banned. There can just be smoking establishments and non-smoking establishments.

Oh quit winning already! It's been that way in Washington State for sometime now.

Don't you think that if smoking kills the government would outlaw it like they do other things? Also, to my knowledge there is no longer a direct link between second hand smoke and cancer. Lung cancer doesn't automaticlly mean you smoke or have been around smoke.

ummm, you need to check up on your facts! no offense!!! Second hand smoke is a deadly killer! Especially when 85% is invisible!I know lung cancer doesnt mean you have smoked! I was just stating I am at high risk of getting lung cancer! Hey that came from the Doctors and I think they would know what they were talking about!!! Smoking does kill - where on earth have you got the idea it doesnt. The government gives people the responsibility to not smoke too much. Same with drink and certain drugs.

So are you saying that if we are responsible and don't smoke too much then it won't kill you?

If your saying that no matter what it will kill you than why doesn't the government tell the tobacco companies to make them healthier?

Smoking doesn't kill, Cancer does.

I agree.

I'm a smoker, and I'll go out of my way not to smoke around non smokers, but I don't think the goverment should be able to tell a business owner that his establishment has to prohibit smoking.

It's not like anyone's forcing non smokers to patronize those places.
