Several reasons, here are a couple.

The methods of education have improved and people are now more willing to investigate and ask questions.
Also the internet which allows such inquisitiveness world wide.

In addition to ChristineM's reasons may I add...

Religion in the US has become in many cases politicised - mainly in favour of the GOP - that is not resonating with many young people
Religion is out of step with the majority of people in issues such as Same Sex Relationships, Abortion, Vaccines, etc.
I should add the child abuse cases that have come to the fore.

I believe that Christianity is on the decline because God never intended Christianity to last forever. No religion was ever intended by God to last forever. As time goes on a religion reaches its wintertime and God speaks again through another Messenger. I believe that God has spoken again, as He always does when people have lost their way.

“All that lives, and this includes the religions, have springtime, a time of maturity, of harvest and wintertime. Then religion becomes barren, a lifeless adherence to the letter uninformed by the spirit, and man’s spiritual life declines. When we look at religious history, we see that God has spoken to men precisely at times when they have reached the nadir of their degradation and cultural decadence. Moses came to Israel when it was languishing under the Pharaoh’s yoke, Christ appeared at a time when the Jewish Faith had lost its power and culture of antiquity was in its death those. Muhammad came to a people who lived in barbaric ignorance at the lowest level of culture and into a world in which the former religions had strayed far away from their origins and nearly lost their identity. The Bab addressed Himself to a people who had irretrievably lost their former grandeur and who found themselves in a state of hopeless decadence. Baha’u’llah came to a humanity which was approaching the most critical phase of its history.” (Udo Schaefer, The Light Shineth in Darkness, p. 24)
No, religion is not on the decline, but agnosticism and atheism are on the decline.
Since the year 2000, religion has made resurgence whereas atheism and agnosticism are on the decline.

The growth rates of the Abrahamic religions from 1910-2010 were as follows: Judaism .11%, Christianity 1.32%, Islam 1.97%, and Baha’i Faith 3.54%.

Atheism was growing at a rate of 6.54% from 1910-2010 but dropped to a growth rate of 0.05% from 2000-2010. Agnosticism was growing at a rate of 5.45% from 1910-2010 but dropped to a growth rate of 0.32% from 2000-2010. That demonstrates that both atheism and agnosticism are on the decline but also that there are many more agnostics than atheists.

Because of the rise of 'spiritual but not religious' and with more universal advanced education people prefer to think for themselves on the issues.

If this is at the case I wonder if it is due to population growth in more impoverished areas and child birth declining in the more advanced parts.

kentucky has one of the top ten highest illiteracy rates in the US, one of the top ten poorest in the US, in the top ten religious, and the number one for neglect and abuse of children.

it is also predominantly GOP. so the old adage keep them dumb and poor, seems to be working for the GOP

I see God makes all things New.

I see all things have been made new and the power of influence has been removed from priests and the ecclesiastical and the choice is placed in the hands of each of us.

being exposed to posters on here has definitely helped me with my understanding of the world. it's interesting that most on here are genuinely trying to save other's from pain and suffering. their intentions are good but their methodology is questionable. what good is life, or heaven, for all; if it lacks love for any?

I think there is some truth to that.

Why Muslims are the world’s fastest-growing religious group

But from my perspective it is more than that. Christianity is a slowly dying religion because it is older whereas Islam is the newest major religion that claims a large share of belief. Moreover, the Gospel message had already reached every nation and 95% of the world's inhabitants by the mid-1800s so everyone knows about Christianity. The reason Christianity does not die altogether is because children are still being born and raided as Christians. There are some people who convert to Christianity in adulthood, but I think that more people drop out of Christianity and become atheists than join Christianity, although I don't have any statistics.

Many don't believe in or attached ven think about heaven. Its perhaps one of the questions people are now unafraid to ask... How does a heaven idea even work?

heaven, eden the garden, is always near by, sometimes folks don't understand what they have until they lose it. my sister once asked what heaven was for me, i explained, "Heaven is where ever you and I are sharing a meal together."

    She grew silent.

We'd just finished a spaghetti supper at her house.

We always have heaven; so long as we have love that holds, yokes us together.

that is communion. love is atonement with other as self. the coming together of east and west to sit at the table with abraham

heaven is a reflection of happiness in someone's eyes that self loves.

It shrinks and surges following corruption and renewal. We are in a shrinking period where people are reacting to corruption. There has been a lot of corruption, and so there is shrinking interest. When that changes interest in religion will surge.

Some Historians also claim that religion thrives when poverty does and shrinks when people are well off. I don't know if that is correct or not. Historians try to track and correlate things, and its one of the uses of History.

Well....if your a Christian who has payed attention to your own religion you would know that scripture prewarns the demise of most self described Christians towards the end of days. It is a realization of the natural progression of this world according to Christian scripture.
