What businesses will be closed?
On Sunday night, Mr Morrison announced a crackdown on public venues.

The following businesses are to be closed by midday:

  • pubs
  • clubs
  • cinemas
  • casinos
  • nightclubs
  • indoor places of worship
  • gyms
  • indoor sporting venues

  • What businesses will be left open?
    Under the new measures, cafes and restaurants will be able to operate, but only to offer takeaway and delivery services.

    Hotels will be allowed to continue operations in an accommodation capacity.
    • supermarkets
    • banks
    • petrol stations
    • pharmacies
    • convenience stores
    • freight and logistics
    • food delivery
    • bottle shops
    • hairdressers and beauticians
    Who is going to stop me from leaving my home?
    Both state and federal governments have enacted emergency powers that give them the right to fine and even jail people who breach lockdown orders.

    Victoria has announced it is forming a 500-strong police task force to enforce social-distancing rules

    Queensland has already been using police to check on people in isolation and an expanded police presence has been flagged in affected areas of New South Wales.

    On Sunday night, Mr Morrison said further restrictions would be considered if social-distancing measures were not adhered to.

    New testing criteria came into effect on Saturday 21 March 2020
    People without symptoms should not be tested.

    Patients who meet at least one clinical AND at least one epidemiological criteria should be tested.

    Clinical criteria:
    Fever *
    OR
    Acute respiratory infection (for example, shortness of breath, cough, sore throat)

    Epidemiological criteria:
    Travelers from overseas with onset of symptoms within 14 days of return or;
    Close contacts of confirmed COVID-19 cases with onset of symptoms within 14 days of last contact or;
    Healthcare workers and residential aged care workers meeting clinical criteria or;
    Aged and residential care residents meeting clinical criteria or;
    Patients who are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people meeting clinical criteria
    * ≥ 38 degrees, without another immediately apparent cause such as urinary tract infection or cellulitis

    The following patients should also be tested:
    Patients admitted to hospital
    with acute respiratory tract infection AND fever*

    Only confirmed cases should be notified. A confirmed case is a person who tests positive to a validated SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid test or has the virus identified by electron microscopy or viral culture.

    Additional directions for aged care facilities and mass gatherings
    Additional directions for aged care and mass gatherings were signed by the Deputy Chief Health Officer in accordance with emergency powers arising from the declared state of emergency on 21 March 2020. The Aged Care Directions make provision for restricted access to residential aged care facilities to limit the spread of COVID-19 within a particularly vulnerable population.

    The Mass Gatherings Directions (no 2) replace the mass gatherings Directions made on 18 March 2020. These directions prohibit non-essential mass-gatherings in order to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Hair dressers was one that stuck out to me.

But ours also is very precise about what can operate. Plumbers for example. So if it's not on the list, it should be closed. At least from your post, that strict "on the list or close" criteria does not apply.

Seriously? Was his scientific source a certain orange donkey promoting racism and dismissing everything as a partisan political attack?

I have been delaying posting a definitive statement about that. It seems to be a state thing, emergency laws notwithstanding (I haven’t checked that).

This is two hours ago for example ...

I'm Victorian, so really just talking about Victoria. It is a state by state decision. Far as I know, it's just ACT and Vic for now, the rest hoping to get through this week, school holidays approaching.

It's less than ideal that this has not been mandated federally, imho.

Hi mate, rush posted earlier, just wanted to clarify.
Schools are state controlled here, only 1 state and 1 territory (think of it as 2 states) have actually closed.

I'm no fan of Scott Morrison, I thought he did a fairly crappy job during the bushfires, and I'd give him a 5/10 this time around.
(Even that is due more to some of the assistance packages organised quickly than messaging or clarity)

Fortunately, the government has raised unemployment benefit considerably, which is great news. The previous amount was basically poverty. There is an expectation of hundreds of thousands of unemployed almost immediately.

Cash for small businesses and loans guaranteed in $66b coronavirus stimulus package

Australia fared unusually well through the GFC, largely because of a well targeted stimulus package from the Labor government.
The Liberal govt aren’t wasting any time doing that again, which I think is good news.

The psychological dimension is going to be interesting.
No football, no bars or clubs, not much of anything, and a million unemployed.

Authorities are disturbed by the degree of non-compliance regarding social distancing and self isolation of infected people.

There are muted warnings of immanent total lockdown if this doesn’t change.
