Being Outed As An Atheist

Why do some religious people hold such disgust for atheists?

You have left the system, their social constructs from which they view the world. Thus you have rejected the groundwork from which everything they value exists. Many see this as a betrayal of not just the system but of personal rejection as they believe they follow, and are representatives of the system. The system and identity are merged thus by rejecting say Christianity you have rejected the people within it on the same basis. There is also an element of fear as the system has them so bound that leaving it could be social and economic suicide. So there must be something wrong with you, in their eyes, as any normal person, from their eyes, would never do such a thing. Hence why they isolate themselves from you as you not only showed the system to be flawed but that people can lead perfectly normal lives outside the system following whatever new system they accept or develop. This bursts their bubble so it is better to ignore such examples.

Usually such a reaction is from more isolated, fundamentalist view points which have a driving ideology behind their views. Evangelical for example. More liberal views tend to not make such a fuss about others choices or at least acknowledge there are other ways to live one's life without a specific religious ideology driving them to conform.
