As the ash falls from the sky today, it's reminding me of snow flurries.
The dots of light are ashes my camera could pick up.

You also have to have a respirator mask when the air is this bad. The regular cloth ones we've been wearing for the pandemic don't work to filter out the fine particles in the air.

Is this the first time for this to happen at your location?

No. There's been ash on and off this week, but not as much as today.
It was also like this last year (this year the fires are much closer with one being in the same county).:(

Sorry to hear that. We, personally, here in NJ had our first real tornado scare. More are expected unfortunately in coming years. Many twisters were generated by Ida as the storm passed over land here in the northeast US. A new world it seems. It missed our house by less than a half mile. Sad to see our neighbor businesses (large green houses ) wiped out. There were not many injuries that i know of . I hope things will clear up for you and your family...

Tornadoes don't scare me, but I grew up with them and have seen many.
My first earthquake scared me some wondering what it was as all my assumptions were proving wrong, and then I was hit it with this terrible surreal feeling that left me feeling utterly vulnerable and helpless when I realized the very ground beneath me is shaking from deep below.

I've experienced that weightless feeling during an apparent earthquake or tremor (was no news report of the incident). I was thirteen, due to my mother having flu, dad slept in my bed for a few nights. The bed shook and I thought I was falling for just a second (the sensation of weightlessness) and dad yelling,"quit it! I have to get up early in the morning !". My fault, of course.

Are you close to the fires? I've been in a few situations like that, sometimes breathing in hot ash, even when the fires are miles away. We've even been getting some extra haze here due to the fires in California.

Not close enough to breathe hit ash, but the Sequoias aren't far from here, and cities in the same county have been evacuated.

I've heard some smaller towns in Northern California were wiped out by fire. Most of the people got out in time, but there was nothing left of their homes. Great loss to wildlife, too. It's pretty sad situation all the way around.

It really is. And I don't see any improvements with the draught and agriculture, green lawns and vanity fountains.

I've read a number of articles in recent years about the whole drought situation and how the Western states are facing a serious water crisis. Lake Mead is drying up.
