Are American Women Oppressed?

I saw this in another thread and thought it would be good for discussion:

Here is a letter from an American Christian woman to Muslim women in the middle east:
http://www.haqqanisoul.com/forum/top...om-a-christian

It should speak for itself.

My thoughts:

This is ONE woman's opinion. Clearly she's an unhappy person. While I agree our culture isn't perfect, her generalizations about American men and women tick me off. Do Muslims read this and believe every word? If so, they shouldn't.

the letter is utter dribble. i just hope someday she gets the opportunity to leave the country and be truly happy in one of the morally pure islamic countries that she obviously romantically idolizes so much.

I should check that out...see if she still lives here in the States. (I'll bet $10 she does.)

Well, I agree with JMorris. If she hates it here so much she should just leave.

But on the other hand the only place I'm seeing the letter in a google search is on Islamist websites. I wouldn't be surprised if this is propaganda of some sort.

Between the Israeli assault on Lebanon and the Zionist “war on terror,
Well she doesn't waste much time does she? She jumps right in with anti-semitic scare quotes.

They bombarded us Americans from Hollywood, instead of from fighter jets or with our own American-made tanks. They would like to bomb you in this way too
Oh - imagine the horror or a free media, or the depth and artistry of Hollywood movies coming to the Middle East! That would be horrible wouldn't it.

They present casual sex as harmless recreation because they aim to destroy the moral fabric of the societies into which they beam their poisonous programming.
More dribble, I guess. There's nothing wrong with casual, safe sex. Nobody should have to suppress their identity in order to please clergy.

The rest of the letter is basically too frustrating to read and dissect. The fact that she continuously quote the Bible in her letter shows that clearly she's insane. If this "American Christian woman" hates it here, then she should leave. Heck, she should become a nun if she's so religious.

I'll agree that in some places in America, like the South women might still be oppressed. But it is because patriarchy has not fully been dismantled yet. She seems to want to create a boogeyman out of liberal feminism, which I find intolerable and bordering on fascism.

It's nice to see religious whackjobs of different types finding common ground of insanity.

Assuming that this isn't a bs propaganda piece, like nearly every other "letter from x to y" is.

anne...um...cough cough

ever heard of the glass ceiling?

Yes. Have you not seen improvement on that particular issue?

That does not compare to what we're discussing here, which is the wildly unfair picture painted in the letter I linked to.

i wouldnt be surprised either.

im sure you'd agree thats theres nothing inherently anti-semitic about being honestly & fairly critical of Israel's use of force. but her saying that the War on Terrorism is another (one of many apparently) zionist conspiracy certainly implies an irrational distrust & fear.

while sexism and unfair treatment of women exists in america, there certainly isnt an institutional oppression of women.

Mr. Cheese, when did I say we were perfect?

I repeat...I am referring to the generalizations made in the letter I linked to in the OP.

You seem to be trying to steer the conversation in another direction.

So...I shouldn't post it for discussion?

If someone else posts the link to this letter, I shouldn't post a response from my point of view?

Your choice....

I think its about as informative as a website proclaiming prince charles is the anti christ.....

a simple google search shows this woman is eaither a grade A whack job (the internet isnt full of them, honest), made up and does not exist, and/or this is just a steaming pile of dingo feces pretending to be a legitimate letter from an american...

the web is full of drivel.....
if you wish to discuss drivel, that is your choice

My sincere apologies...I will bow out of this thread

Don't forget. We also ground up poor brown children from third world countries to make McDonald's hamburgers. People really don't think that's cow, do they?
