The Devil's Advocate
I run a little website. I don't entirely know what I'm doing, but I can't afford to hire someone, so everything pretty much gets done by trial and error. Help!

One of the things the CMS I'm using does is give me statistics on my site. For example, it tells me my "referrers." The instructions say that my "referrers" are the external urls that point to my site. So when I look at them I have two questions:

1. Why would my own urls - urls within my own site - be listed as a referrer, which are supposedly external? Did I do something wrong somewhere?

2. Every now and then I see a url that isn't google or yahoo etc, and sometimes when I click it, I see that someone has written a nice blog post referring to my site or quoted something from it. That's great. :) But I also find referring sites that are commercial - buy tickets online, etc. and I can't see any link to my site from their page. This was merely curious but not a big deal until yesterday. Yesterday I noticed that one of these commercial sites was called "18sexforum." Needless to say, I don't want my site associated with that. How and why are these commercial sites pointing to my site? Are they using it in someway?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

1. it prob means how your site is reffered to

2. google aranges pages by keywords and popularaty so like your sit's key words are bv. naked religous and lilithu so if you type in naked and lilithu you will get all kinds of sites that also encorperate one of these words and if one of these sites is popular then it will be higher up in the searce engine

It's nothing wrong. 'Referrers' tells you what links were used to gain access to any of your webpages, and that includes your own webpages. (It's not 'external' to the site, but to each webpage.)

Spammers. They have programs that 'crawl' through websites like bugs and pick up any links or e-mail addresses they can. As far as I know, there's nothing you can do about it.

Thank you. :)

Even if I can't do anything about it, I'm still curious. What benefit do they get out of linking to my site on UUism from their porn site? Why would they want to direct people to my site?
