Engyo, question for ya, why shouldn't you correct people when what they say is wrong. isn't that how we learn? I don't claim to know lots about Buddhism (although I have studied it for 6 years) but when I see someone post something about Buddhism that I believe is wrong, I am going to tell...
I don't know if it is inherent of democracy that the West uses most of the worlds resources. I would bet that it has more to do with our consumer society. Capitalism is inherently flawed. So I am not talking about people taking a "80% income cut" but to just cut back on resources. Dont shop...
if 20% of the worlds population use 80% of the resourses then instead of bringing the 80% up maybe a solution is bring the 20% down.... didn't Gandi say live simply so that others can simple live? also, as to what we can do to help the situation.... I think we might look into how our...
I saw the movie, can't remember anything from it... I consider Buddhism a religion because it tries to answer questions like, what are we, where do we come from, what happens when we die, how do we ge there, ect... as for the difference between prayers, I don't have enough time to answer.
Peace...
I understand what you are saying. however it seems to me that a belief in karma would still have a person thinking about the motive more then the result... how does one get good karma? by having good intensions... the result does enhance the karmic effect but the motivation is a lot stronger...
"I'm not sure what you are saying about outcomes not being important to someone concerned about heaven or the next life. could you give me an example?"
well lets say we take two individuals that are both good people (in the general sense). one is a Christian and the other is an atheist...
I don't know if murder is on the rise.. I was just answering Steve. his comment was "I wonder if the increase in Murders these days is a the result of continuing evolution, maybe the mutations have stared to make some of us think that murder good now. Then these people will murder everyone like...
thank you for your answer, I do enjoy the conversation...
"If we evolved to think murder is wrong then it could have been just as easy for us to evolve to think murder is right, after all if evolution is true then our thought patterns etc are just the result of random mutations etc." I...
but we didn't evolve to be killers... maybe in some other universe there are people who evolved to naturally want to kill but it's not us... so someone goes to a judge and says we evolved that way. I don't know to many people who would even give him a second to explain. we wuld know right away...
I think we have evolved to feel that killing is wrong. if it wasn't then we wouldn't have to justify it when we do kill... also, I think we are still evolving... in the past people thought that homosexuality was wrong but this is changing... excepting homosexualtiy, I think, is a sign that we...
I would say that it does matter. it matters because we evolved that way... even if you believe in random chance, it still matters if we survive. if everyone on the planet was murdered or nuked I would think this is wrong. I think this is wrong because I have evolved to think this way...
but I do not believe that for something to be objective it has to have been written in a book... it just means that it is inherently right or wrong..... and again I think biology can provide a good theory for that
but do we know enough about human nature to say that morals come from our experience? how do we know that it isn't in our genetic makeup? and if it is in our DNA then how is it subjective? I'm not sure that we will ever be able to really know if good and bad are a part of human nature...
so if good and bad are subjective concepts they why do we all know that stabbing a baby in the eye for fun is wrong.... are we just culturally taught that we don't do that? I can't except that..... it seems to me that there are things that are objectively right and wrong... although I do not...
and so if they are only acting because they believe they will go somewhere when they die then really their actions are not for the present time... their actions are for a future time.... and if their actions are for a future time then it really doesn't matter what happens in the present.... if...
