I don't believe God needs worship. For me, worship, is indicative of the high end of the respect continuum. Deep respect. It's the people that psychologically need the worship. After many years of established worship, I feel 'off' if I miss it, as if I skipped breakfast and coffee. I can't see God caring much when some little insignificant guy like me misses that morning puja.

A divine being would deserve the utmost reverence because divinity is the ultimate in love and compassion. Divinity don't take less than is deserved unless it's totally worth it.

The closest I ever came to divine love is my mother. She was selfless, and her selfishness was that her whole family loved her back just as much. And we all did. You couldn't help it the way she was.

Question: Is God worthy of worship?

I say it depends on whether or not he loves us

I think that the only good reason for worshiping him is to do so out of love - rather than out of fear or as an attempt to appease him

I think that if he doesn't love me then there is no reason for me to love him.

And I don't know the whether he loves me or not or not:

I can see that it could be argued both ways!

So I've voted "don't know"

But what do you think?

Please share your reason :D
Yes it is very worthy. And yes God loves us all very much as a father loves his children and he enjoys our presence just like a father. Whatever you praise and love the most is what you want to be more like. God is wholly good and so it is for our own benefit that we are told to praise God. Because he's the infinite holy Spirit that is the essence of every virtue and the source of all that is good or meaningful. Without him there is nothing.

And by praising God we draw nearer to him if we do it with our whole heart. God wants us to praise him because he loves to enjoy our presence and that is the joy of the Lord you can feel when you worship.

If God were shown to have done something admirable then (subject to a check on the circumstances) I'd admire it.

Or I think I would ─ I'm still waiting to be shown.

If Satan said "love me or I'll torture you," many would love Satan because of fear of his power.

Many Christians are God fearing. If he's a loving God, why fear?

If we worship because our deity is powerful (not good), then we might as well worship Satan.

The track record of God doesn't make me think that he loves us. God's son was kind, and healed the sick, fed the hungry, etc. Jesus didn't die for our sins, and I know this because Jesus asked God "why hath thou forsaken me?" Surely, it was God's wish that Jesus die. If so, it was God's wish to take a good being away from mankind (take away the healer). Was that kind of God or cruel?

God flooded the earth in Noah's time, but that killed a lot of innocent children who had no sins. Does that show that God loved us? Or, is God a mass murderer?

We don't have to kill for God if God tells us to kill. This is because God is all-powerful, and can kill for himself, and doesn't need us. If God wanted to end racism, he could kill all the racists. It could be argued that God allows freedom of choice, but that freedom often means that people are on the wrong path, and God could kill them or put them on the right path.

It doesn't appear that God loves us. Largely, God ignores the prayers of cancer patients. Why, then should we want to sit next to God in heaven for eternity?

That moment when you realize God hates who you are (still has compassion and love for you in that sense), but love him still and even more for not having punished you yet, is the moment you when repent, regret, and then God loves you. However, it's hard for most people to be that humble.

The word "worship" comes from the Old English word weorthscipe meaning "an acknowledgement of worth".

Ok, thank you. In this case, your question would then be “Is God worthy of an acknowledgement of worth?”

I believe He is the creator and the one who has given life and everything we have. That is why I would say He is worthy of an acknowledgement of worth.

Could God be worshipped because of His inherent excellence regardless of whether He loves us or not?

Because He acts as a Father to us and will chastise us when we go too far into wickedness and depravity (by basically just let giving us up to the consequences of our bad behavior). But His mercy is far more than His wrath and Christ intercedes for us to the Father.

Worship is what connects us to another world, just as it connects our instincts to this world. By worshiping, man responds to a spiritual and transcendental feeling, and responding to any natural feeling causes pleasure and forms the basis of human happiness.
In the words of Imam Ali: "Those who worship God are the remembrance of God and seek refuge in Him in hardships and are freed from the feeling of loneliness and fear." (Sermon 225 of Nahj al-Balaghah by Imam Ali)

I definitely believe that He is worthy of our worship - and He most certainly loves us.

However - my main reason that I decide to worship Him is because I believe that He is a perfect Being - therefore He will always do right and never lead me wrong.
