We're not talking about World War - we're talking about how a presumably gruesome stabbing spree could've been mitigated by a responsible armed citizen.
There is no meaningful difference that I can see.

Reason dictates that interjecting a significant increase in the intensity and efficiency of active violence will increase the negative consequences of violence overall.
But gun fanatics abhor reason when it comes to the subject of guns. So this point will be totally lost on them.
And maybe our hero was in a shop buying Christmas while the perp had a couple of guns and killed 15 or 20 innocents who just happen to be out with their kids and had left their gun at home. The hero walks put of the shop with his gun in hand to be met by a hail of bullets from worried police seeing another gun walking purposely onto the scene.
