KFC honors a communist hero with a themed outlet in China

Beijing -- Fast-food chain KFC is memorializing a popular Chinese communist hero with restaurant decor extolling his deeds, in a rare matching of an iconic American brand with communist propaganda. The official Xinhua News Agency said the company launched its first "Lei Feng Spirit" restaurant in Lei's home province of Hunan on Sunday, ahead of Tuesday's official remembrance day for the soldier who died in 1962 at the age of 21.

Lei's example of selfless service to the Communist Party and his comrades was popularized in 1963 by former leader Mao Zedong and remains a rallying point for party unity and public service. Critics question the facts surrounding his alleged good deeds, saying most were based on accounts in a diary reportedly found after his death.

I wonder if The Colonel is turning in his grave right now.

I personally think we should explicitly politicize all of our fast food chains. Let's get a list going:

McDonalds - Capitalism
KFC - Communism
Wendy's - Anarchy?

Anyone think of any more?

Considering KFC started out in a gas station, I think the "colonel" would be pleased.

Quick! Hook him up to a generator! We mustn't waste his power.

I, too, think the Colonel was very focused on commercial success and would have taken this in stride. Anyway Lei Feng is reportedly someone who does good deeds, like a Chinese Santa Claus. He's not a bloody killer. He clears garbage and helps old people; and its just a KFC not the Lincoln Memorial.

It wouldn't take much. I've heard stories of Colonel Sanders in retirement - after he sold his portion of KFC - going into random KFC restaurants and berating the staff if the food wasn't up to his standard.

What REALLY corrupted them was capitalism.

Weird how much Shanghai looks like NYC,
isnt it?

shanghai - Google Search:
I don't know that capitalism corrupted them, but I suspect that city-culture has changed the country folk. City culture is relatively aggressive. It feels harsh and cold, and maybe it is. A lot of people don't like cities.

I doubt that the people who can afford this level of Western decadence are actually communists.

Perhaps @Audie can help elucidate.

Keep in mind that I am from Hong Kong and as such tend
to have a standoffish attitude toward mainlanders.

It is my experience that mainlanders are pretty much
apathetic about politics. China was such a mess,
for so long, the stability and prosperity are very
welcome. What can they do about the gov't, anyway?

There is no tradition of political discourse as
in the US, and many do not find it impressive.
Why would they?

Now is a chance to make some money, have
a better life. Nobody wants to mess that up.

As for identifying as a "communist", I have an
uncle who may be the last true communist in
China. He cannot seem to get past the cultural
revolution, and we know to avoid anything to
get him started!
