Two teenage Indian girls gang-raped yesterday, hanged from tree in UP Village

A CNN report says "According to Indian government statistics, a woman is raped every 22 minutes on average."
Most of rape cases are never registered even after reported to police, also those rape cases that are carried out by Indian army or Jihadist groups in Kashmir are not included in this number.

how this rape culture has suddenly erupted in India after 2008? i know one possible reason, I'll write that later.

comment please

Why do I get the feeling that your OP is retaliatory for Ssainhu's thread,
"http://www.religiousforums.com/forum/current-events/163602-25-year-old-woman-stoned-death.html" ?

To the lives lost: condolences.

ps - I wouldn't visit UP villages even if I had an army w/ me.

Lack of moral and social fibre that seems to be spreading or becoming more open.

Is publicity and media to blame?

i think when pornographic material is common, it inspires for sin, I checked history of internet in India, 3G launched there in 2008, and suddenly rape cases increased to double within a year.
now, on 29th of May, 2014, Google Trends show that India is on top (number one) in hitting sexual contents.

This stat doesn't prove anything, the list differs for each keyword, for eg: pakistan beats india for the keyword 'porn videos' , also should be noted that india is the second largest populated country. China is not in the list because google is banned in china.

I am very sad to hear about this.

Really? Where do they get the stats from?

Most of rape cases are never registered even after reported to police,
........ Oh, so those stats (above) must be very rather weak, yes?

Question:- What is the population of India?

today's news will answer you
Records show a rape is committed every 22 minutes across the country of 1.2 billion people, though activists say that number is low because many victims are reluctant to come forward.

I already pointed out that the records are rubbish.

Maybe we should all dive into available records and start posting human atrocities?

Me? I would start at home..... not abroad, highlighting teaching outrages being committed in certain schools over here.

Pakistan and India have similar culture, people with similar mindset. More or less, both countries are facing similar problems.

Are you sure?

I think you will find that Indian culture is quite different from Pakistani culture. That is what caused all the problems at the end of British India and has caused the divergence of progress since independence.

India is a booming economy although I know there is also poverty and ignorance.
Pakistan is disorganised and unjust.

If you visit these two countries you will see that India spends money on infrastructure and it is said the state is rich but the people are poor.
In Pakistan the state is poor but there people are financially better off.(than in general in India)

yes, they are different religiously, raping a teenage has nothing to do with religion, don't you think so?

you can check GDP (nominal) per capita, India and Pakistan stand at similar position.

whatever, do you know any reason behind this increasing number of rape cases?
I don't think it's been established that rapes are increasing. Perhaps more are reported, but the OP itself acknowledges that most are never reported and that many that are don't make it into the records.

What we do have is wider publicity and interest. Twenty years ago most of these high profile rapes, stonings, &c would never have come to the attention of anyone outside the immediate region of the crime.

Horrible. :(

Is there first an admittance that rape culture exists? At least for India?

I think so, but perhaps not in some regions. India is a fair size place, as you know, and I think we'd see substantial regional variances. As far as I'm concerned, the more it makes the news, the better. Bollywood portrayal of women doesn't help much.

As with a lot of social issues, I don't think it is worse or better now then is ever was. What has changed is our ability to access that information and share it around the world. Twitter, facebook, 24/7 online news. We're hearing about all these things sooner and with easier ways to confirm sources.

I agree with V on this. The more people hear about it the better. People need to get angry enough to get off their butts and do something about it.

For what ever reason, I do not think these girls hung themselves.
Pretty damn screwed up that the actual ones supposed to be protecting the people are sicko's too.

I wonder how they knew who did this to the girls, from what I heard, they all face the DP, and good, hang umm high, but by their arms with a slight shorter rope then the ones around their necks, and let the family beat them with sticks until their arms break off and then gravity will take over and they can die like the girls did, slow and quite painful.
