yeah, that leads to another question:
Who are we to decide that marriage has to be the way it is? Does it ever give an actual marriage ceremony in the Bible at all?
Not in the way marriage cerimonies are today. The only cerimony I came across was the after wedding cerimony which was celibrated for a week after the union was finalized. I didn't find any passages that dealt with the actual "wedding" cerimony. In the culture of that time, I don't think all, but certainly most of the marriages were contracted by the brides father. The groom would pay the father of the bride and the father would give his daughter as a gift. Which sux for the bride if she didn't like the guy.:(

yeah, but how on earth would marriage be sacred if a woman was considered property?

Well, it wouldn't. Which is exactly why I posted this topic. It gives you a whole new way of looking at what marriage really means. The real meaning is a lot different than what churches are preaching.

Unfortunatley from my perspective, marriage has never meant much. I'm the product of an affair: my dad cheated on his wife at the time with my mother. My mom wound up being his third wife. My Dad always cheated on my mom, and they got divorced when i was 12...

So, i havent experienced any good side of marriage.... *shrugs* Sacred? Not really....

I'm sorry Ashley dear, but I have a bit to say on this. I believe that it is sacred, but Satan(and yes I believe the dude is real) is trying to attack the families because they are the basis of God's plan. He wants to screw over God as much as he can and he is starting(and has been doing ages) with the families.

The family unit has been perverted over time, especially in the last century. I wish all people could feel the sacredness of the family that I feel. I wish you could understand and see why it is so sacred to me.

I believe whole-heartedly that families are sacred and are an essential part to our Heavenly Father's plan, and that is why Satan is attacking them.

Say what you like on the subject Becky, i'm not going to be offended by your opinions, silly goose! *smiles*
The family unit in Biblical times, though, consisted of one man, and several women with conqubines. To say that God has always had this vision of monogamy... is unfounded.
When God gave the ten commandments, and said "no adultery" it was still okay for Solomon to have ...what was it... 500 wives...300 conqubines? not sure on the numbers....
In biblical times, women were property. It wasnt really taht sacred, the man who wanted the girl made a business deal with the father. What WAS sacred was a woman's virginity. Jews would stone women to death for "adultery" even if her husband had several other wives... justice? fairness? sanctity?

I would say it isn't unfounded, because I believe both you and I believe that many things were taken out of the bible and many things were put it.

The Jews screwed God's plan, they didn't follow what he said to do, from my viewpoint. It's hard to explain, but the LDS church can explain, I just can't, I'm dumb that way.

The Jews didn't understand God's law, they weren't ready for it. I don't know how to explain this, I need Katzpur and Jonny back. :(

I don't believe it was unfounded. If God wanted a man to have many wifes, why did he not make many Eves for Adam?

Ask any one of "god's men" like David, Solomon, Abraham, Noah, any of them had at least more than one wife.... *shrugs* (i forget if Moses had more than one or not...)

Personally, i take a different interpretation of the 10 commandments....

Yes, many things have been left out of the canon

Just cause you dont know how to say something doesnt make you dumb! Unfortunatley, in the way that all squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares, all LDS are christian, but not all christians are LDS.... so i'm not sure how valid it would be to some of the people on here....

I believe God wanted it one way, but when people didn't do it, sometimes he let them. Every time someone kills another person, does God kill him? No. Immediate punishment is not the only signal that something is bad.

Yes, but those men who made the mistake of polygamy were "men of God"
Has any killer ever been a man of god?
