Just as they seem pretty straightforward in this passage (Luke 22:36):

Why would Jesus instruct his followers to arm themselves if violence is never appropriate?

Later in Luke when Jesus is arrested and his followers attempt to use their swords he says "No more of this!" and heals the ear of the injured servant. He also asks of those arresting him, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs?" Not to mention the fact that Jesus and his followers go to the extreme of allowing him to be crucified.

Interesting stuff Angellous. Any suggested links where I can learn more about early church history?

Acts is regarded as historically worthless.

Think of it as the Gospel of John. It's a theological reflection on the genesis of the Church.
Okay... but it would still give an indication of the beliefs of the community that created it, no? Even if the Centurion wasn't real himself, there would have been real Christians upholding the story as a good example, right?

"Violence is inappropriate in this situation" is not the same as "violence is always inappropriate."

This really throws me for a loop. There's more than 2,000 years of church history and it touches almost the entire planet. I had to do my church history in large chunks over several years, and I'm nowhere near comprehensive.

My favorites are:

Early Christian Writings: Online Books -- this includes both primary and secondary sources

Early Church Fathers -- this is cool because when you click on one, it will list texts and translations and scholarly resources

Based on some recent posts, Angellous evidently believes that revenge = justice, that Matthew 5:38 - 548 should not be interpreted as favoring Christian pacifism, that I'm a jerk, and that only Christian theologians fluent in Greek and Hebrew are capable of properly interpreting the Bible. Am I correct in this assessment?

What, is it cherry-picking season already?

I have no idea what Angellous believes, as I appear to be a master at misunderstanding him. I think I'll join the ranks of those who make crap up about his beliefs.

Angellous believes in life after love. He also believes the children are the future. He's wrong on both accounts.

There has been a cottage industry maintain by a certain type of RF member whose mission it is to tell Angellous what he believes.

So on this thread I invite everyone to participate in this practice. It would be good for those who slander me to see how other people perceive my beliefs.

You don't have to provide evidence unless you know that you're making a judgment based on a specific post.

I'll reserve the right to confirm, deny, or decline to comment on any issue that is brought up here.

He believes he has a doppelganger in Kentucky named Mitch.

Angellous is a Christian and therefore believes that the Bible is the inspired and infallible word of God, Abortion is murder, Homosexuality is an abomination, women should marry their rapists, the Earth is 6000 years old, dinosaur bones are a lie planted by Satan to deceive us or by God to test our faith, Texas is Jesus' birthplace and that people in literal glass houses should literally not throw literal stones... literally.

He also teams up with Kathryn to burn down abortion clinics and spread the good news to nonbelievers at 6 in the morning.
