Fifth Century Athens? Modern America? Soviet Russia? Republican Spain? Tudor England? Republican France? The Byzantine Empire?

I haven't done any research to confirm this, but the first thing to pop into my mind when I read your question was modern Norway and Denmark.

My understanding is the standard of living is high. They have great health (though that is changing) and healthcare. I think crime rates are some of the lowest. And interestingly, they are some of the least religious people in the world.

I first thought of some of the primative, tribal societies, but on reflection, I'll second Kay's vote.

In a lot of ways i'm a fan of the american old west. The basic freedom to do whatever without interference, y'know? If someone down the road disagreed with your religious beliefs, sexual orientation, or political ideals, so what? He lived miles away and couldn't do dick about it, assuming he even knew. People lived and died by the sweat of their own backs, with no expectations for communal welfare and opportunities existed to anyone willing to make their way.

Of course in reality there was a grossly absent rule of law, and homophobia, racism, misogyny, and every other kind of bigotry were the norm and "anyone" was defined as straight white married males, but if you gloss over that it seems pretty nice.

Modern Scandanavia comes to me first. I'm no historian or geographer though. I actually planned to major in geography but got booted out in my first semester for being a loudmouth. Anyway, as far modern Scandanavia, I really think they're moving in the right direction as far as their concepts of medical ethics and laws regarding the sanctity of life.

Yet with that frontier 'rugged individualism' life was hard, insecure and short.

Oh, seeing Seyorni just reminded me that I deeply admire the eastern concept of doing no harm (ahisma I think?). I don't know much at all about easter cultures, but I have heard that this is a concept that finds itself throughout various cultural goups out in those parts.

Correct on the ahimsa def, M. Sizer, and it's true the concept has a lot of prestige in Hindu and Buddhist regions, but societies rarely live up to the ideals they pay lip-service to.

Although it only lasted 3 days i think the Woodstock Festival 1969 was pretty close, half a million people from all walks of lives, colours races and sexual gendres shared everything ,food, clothing and even their partners with the added bonus of seeing a certain Jimmi Hendrix perform among others.
