Id get excited if I ever got one of those big ones I keep hearing about, the kind I hear you're more likely to get when the IRS doesn't discriminate against you.
It is indeed true that the IRS discriminates.
If you don't over-pay your income tax, they'll
deny you a refund. It's so unfair.

Compared to local government which sells someone house for unpait taxes and keeps 100% of the proceeds (not declared illegal) and cops who ticket people because local government won't tax them, I'll vote for the IRS any day - they returned an overpayment without any sort of fuss.
They may give back overpayments, but they're usually harder on certain groups than others.

What I had in mind is how it taxes single people more than those who are married.
On what basis did you calculate this?
Before I got married, I analyzed our situation.
We'd pay less if we remained single.
(This was cuz we both earned income.)
That argument dint fly.

I'm a walking nightmare, an arsenal of doom
I kill conversation as I walk into a room
I'm a three line whip
I'm the sort of thing they ban
I'm a walking disaster
I'm a demolition man

My happy tail doth wag
like a waving beautiful flag
The rest of you oft do lag
come let's play some tag.

You're just following orders by paying your taxes and that's crap justifying the government doing evil.
Ya know....if I were a liberal, I'd cry....
"False equivalency!"
I resist paying taxes as much as possible.
But IRS employees voluntarily became its orcs.
And knowing the terrible injustice they pursue
is wrong, they do it anyway.

All my friends are married so I've been able to do my own comparisons. There's also lots of info on it like this.
Many tax benefits can only be claimed when an individual files a joint return with a spouse as opposed to filing single
2022 Tax Year: The standard deduction for single taxpayers and married couples filing separately is $12,950. For heads of household, the deduction is $19,400, while for married couples filing jointly, it is $25,900.

  • Are not able to aggregate income with others to potentially reduce effective tax rate
  • Is usually not eligible to make IRA contributions if they do not have income
  • Are not able to leverage a partner's losses for tax advantages
  • May not receive favorable tax treatment in the form of higher deduction thresholds when factoring total household income

Hey, you're the one who did that, Fido.
I only accused the IRS of perpetrating
evil upon people who are down on
their luck.
Did you get training for such histrionics,
or does it come naturally?

Is one the major breadwinner?
That was how married couples could save money
over being single back in the day. But woe unto
both earning money.

I saw no analysis of various married
vs single scenarios in the link.

They explained in without that and even got into some details including head of household vs married filling. No, it didn't have math story problem examples, but when you give snippet of what the law is and give the accompanying numbers you don't need to, especially as it explains various benefits of filing married or even head of household over filing single.
