Well, my dog left her body just the other day. As a Hindu we don't believe in a permanent Heaven as Abrahamics do. I believe she is hanging around, resting, visiting us. I see little shadows scampering around ... she and her brother who left last year. They were together since they were puppies and were very attached to each other. I am not frightened by these little shadows, so I know they're my fur babies.
Some Hindus believe in a temporary stopover after we quit our bodies. There is a temporary "Heaven" called Svarga or Svargaloka, a pleasant rest area between births where those souls who had injured, ill or tired bodies can rest and heal and because they're getting a bit of a reward for their accumulated good karma. There is a temporary "Hell" called Naraka or Narakaloka, but it's more like Purgatory, for souls that need some "rethinking" to do. Then the souls move on to their next birth. The highest rebirth to strive for is a human rebirth.
At any rate, we believe that all living beings have souls and go somewhere or do something after quitting their mortal bodies.
