Fewer Americans see Bible as literal

.................Evangelicals are doing untold damage to the US, including the most recent wave of walk backs on protections for women and minorities. But the problem is bigger than that.

I think too the problem is bigger than that. For one, those 'Evangelicals' in the limelight are often out for the $$$$$$.
When religion causes trouble for the political then those religions put themselves on political radar, so to speak.
Troublesome religion can create a hauntingly dangerous religious climate brewing in today's world.
With backing the United Nation can be strengthened to become God's modern-day arm of the Law.
Just as in the past God used the political military to carry out His will such as when the Roman armies destroyed un-faithful Jerusalem in the year 70.
So, it should come as No surprise when the political surprisingly turns on the corrupted religious world.
Religious 'waters' (people) are drying up spiritually just as the Bible lets us know - Revelation 17:1; Revelation 17:15.
Corrupted religions thinks she sits as some sort of religious ' queen ' that will never see mourning or sorrow.
- Revelation 18:7-8.
A bad economy could make the $$$$$$ false religions have amassed look like easy taking for the political even easy through the international banking system.

I attend a First Baptist church and the consensus there is biblical literalism. There is also a bent towards Christianity as the basis of the US government. I'm assuming that most of my fellow church-goers mean their version of Christianity.

I'm not a literalist myself.

Some got the idea that, like the OT Hebrews being chosen people and the promised land being Israel, the NT Christians are the chosen people and the promised land is the US. Now that's a stretch.

I can see how some people can turn the fact that many early colonists came here to avoid religious persecution as the core of a myth about delivery into some promised land. Or twist, ignore and revise history to make this a nation founded on Christianity.

As a Christian, even if it were a Christian theocracy, I do not want it. Sooner or later, my views would make me an outlaw. As far as I am concerned, theocracy is just another form of authoritarian dictatorship of a people without authority.

That seems a terribly inefficient way of doing it, or suggesting Jehovah has a very terrible aim given the Romans were a bane to the existence of people throughout Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East.

Back in the 60's when the Latin mass turned English one classmate told me she did Not like the change from Latin to English because there is nothing there. She still has Not chosen any religion Bible based or otherwise.
All it took for her to disconnect herself from religion was the taking away of Latin.
That says quite a bit about how strong her belief was.

From a Gallup poll, fewer Americans see the Bible as the literal word of God. It's at a record low of 20%.
I find this interesting because in the U.S., Christianity seems to have a stranglehold on politics, at least the evangelical variety. What do you think? Are our politics being infiltrated by a religious minority?

I am amazed that the number is so low. By volume one would think that they were more than half.

For those not in the know, I'm not even joking.

The Mediaeval Church had a healthier take on this issue imo.
USA has a lot of sprawl, and there are a lot of effects. History of the US: isolation due its large size, poverty, war and then following war: ignorance. When lots of men die off we lose integrity, and this has happened many times. The sprawl and isolation of communities has not helped. The climate also matters, and I'd say populations in more temperate climates and cooler climates are better off even though things grow better in hot climates. Cool is better, though not too cold. It lets you get more done, keeps the bugs off. When did A/C become common? Not long ago. Now we also have the internet which is negating some of the effects of sprawl.

"WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A record-low 20% of Americans now say the Bible is the literal word of God, down from 24% the last time the question was asked in 2017, and half of what it was at its high points in 1980 and 1984. Meanwhile, a new high of 29% say the Bible is a collection of "fables, legends, history and moral precepts recorded by man." This marks the first time significantly more Americans have viewed the Bible as not divinely inspired than as the literal word of God. The largest percentage, 49%, choose the middle alternative, roughly in line with where it has been in previous years." [ibid - emphasis added]

Could someone articulate the "middle alternative"?
"Inspired by God, not all to be taken literally". It's right there in the link.

Geez, it's only the 21st century! What's the rush?!

This is fact, and we wonder why the power and prestige of this nation is a fraction of what it was in 1916. Even TEDDY ROOSEVELT stated that if the republic abandons GOD, then GOD abandons the republic. Judea could not see facts in 589 B.C., and the press and politicans can not in 2022 A.D. THE ONLY THING COMMON ABOUT THE COMMON ERA IS THE 4 year error in the correct birth of the CHRIST.

The middle alternative is the "% Inspired by God, not all to be taken literally" (represented in green on the chart).

To me, anyone who reads real U.S
HISTORY 1748-1921, and can not see the 100"s of examples where the hand of GOD blessed and PRESERVED US A NATION, is either ignorant of fact, or too stupid to understand it. Only one of these insults intelligence, since ignorance is merely lack of knowledge.

Frankly, it makes not one iota of sense to have that belief as there are so many narratives that have "variations", plus there's extensive use of symbolism.
The wealth of non and antiChristians in the republic is 74% of total net worth, the church loses the money battle, the $$ Is Not its god.

If you were to give children a choice between being lectured on the days events, or have story time, children much prefer hearing stories.

The story can to be anything, including make believe, such as in fables with talking animals. These children's stories stick to the young brain, so well, that even as adults they can remember them. They will often be recalled, with the birth of their own children, and be told to them. Such stories appear to represent a unique style of memories, that stick to the natural brain of children, before indoctrinated into culture; start school.

The Bible is partially written in the context of natural stories that can appeal to youngest children and which can be remembered a lifetime. One can even ask an atheist, who has disavowed religion, to repeat the story of Adam and Eve. They can still recite it.

If you were to ask an atheist to recite a lecture from university or high school, they will draw a blank. The Bible and other religious works from around world, often use this natural style of the human brain, before the ego is too strong and overly conditioned by culture. Jesus said unless you become as children; natural brain of a child and its long term memories.

The purpose of this natural memory style; story telling, is similar to what are called compressed files in computer language. These compressed memories are deigned natural storage that can last a lifetime. Decompression of these files, as adults, to find deeper meaning, is possible for those who seek the natural truths of human nature. What starts as simple and small; mustard seed, and natural to the human brain, can be decompressed as natural trees; good for all time.

I use the bible as an example of such stories, but this applies to all other religions also who understood natural data compression, for long term memory storage. Even with book burning, much can still be derived from these simpler childhood stories that cannot be taken away. They are tucked away deep in the brain, for long term storage, and for decompression in the future, when the brain is mature enough to read the full files.

If you look at the two political parties in America, for example, the cartoon representations of the two parties; elephant and donkey is something even a child would like. These compressed files can be decompressed to describe the personality of each party. The elephant is very smart and strong, with shades of gray; free market. The donkey is not as smart, but he is very hard working and bears the burdens of its master; big government. He is brown. These compressed files were chosen to help define the identity of each chosen later in life.

Here we go again, thinking the mind and logic of man can explain GOD
Satan loves people like you. Historical facts and events point put the truths of the texts to all who open their eyes, and fall on their knees before the GOD OF MERCY
