Buddha discovered that rituals and ascetic practices do not lead one to the destination, because the journey is within, to behold the Self, where the wisdom of the universe resides. When He achieved the ultimate goal of discovering the truth of Himself, He experienced Ananda (divine bliss).
Ananda is just another word for God
So
Buddha experienced God (Ananda)
The question is a tricky one at several levels. First, there are various schools of thought as to his status ─ in all of them he's enlightened, in some of them he's enlightened and divine.
Second, in some versions, like Tibetan Buddhism, he's Boss God, and there's a day each year where a great pageant reenacts ─ or used to reenact ─ the old Tibetan gods acknowledging him as their overlord.
Third, when I was in Sri Lanka, I visited the Temple of the Buddha's Tooth at Kandi, and was astonished to find associated in the same precinct small shrines with houses of worship to various Hindu gods whom the worshiper consults for special needs like healing, childbirth, and so on, as though the Buddha were one end of the Hindu spectrum.
Fourth, in the West, the most popular versions of Buddhism are (according to my Buddhist friend) the atheistic ones, and these too have authentic Asian credentials.
So Buddhism is a big tent.

A lot of Buddhists do actually. I know that its absurd to pray to the Buddha, but it happens a lot.

Buddha didn't associate the bliss of Nibbana with God. He wasn't a Hindu.

Yes, Buddhism is a collection of diverse schools, like Hinduism, and most people only experience bits of it. It's possible to generalise, but there will always be exceptions to the rule.
From a Baha'i perspective. As Buddha is seen as a Messenger from God, the Buddha while on earth, is the 'Self of God' we are to turn unto. It is not the flesh we are talking about, but the Spirit that was and is still Buddha.

Obviously not, though I have studied the Buddhist suttas extensively, which is the closest approximation we can now get to what the Buddha said.
I'm not a fan of woolly syncretism, particularly when it involves misrepresention.

No. Even Theravada Buddhists in countries like Sri Lanka pray to the Buddha. A lot. I mean like every single day if they are devoted.

To me it does not. That is because I read anything attributed to Buddha in the light of what Baha'u'llah offered. As such I personally choose to sort what is most likely a light from God and what likely is darkness from men attributing it to God.
The Writings of Buddha appear to have been greatly corrupted by athiest views.
That's my opinion and not that of the Baha'i Faith.
