Missouri conservative group confronts student senator as he takes down and throws away flags from 9/11 display (msn.com)

A student senator at Washington University in St. Louis is being accused of stealing American flags from a 9/11 memorial display and throwing them in the trash.

In a video posted by Young Americans for Freedom, a student can be seen gathering small American flags into bags and attempting to carry them away. A total of 2,977 flags were placed on the lawn representing each murdered 9/11 victim.

The student, identified by YAF as Fadel Alkilani, serves as chairman of the student senate finance committee at the school.

Nathaniel Hope, a member of the UW College Republicans, filmed the video and said that Alkilani had "no remorse" and claimed the flags were in "violation of school rules."

Alkilani told YAF, "I did not violate any university or legal policy. Now go away."

Alkilani reportedly bragged about the vandalism on Twitter saying that he wanted to "protest against American imperialism and the 900,000 lives lost as a result of post 9/11 war." His Twitter account has been made private so that only followers can view his tweets.

In an Instagram story, Alkilani shared a post from Washington University in St. Louis's Instagram account highlighting the display, commenting, "Republicans attacking me in the replies."

Students say that Alkilani had attempted to destroy the memorial on Friday night but was told to stop by campus police.

Fox News reached out to Alkilani, campus police, and Washington University but did not immediately receive a response.

(20) YAF on Twitter: "WOW: A student senator at @WUSTL was caught on video throwing away 2,977 American flags from conservative students' 9/11: Never Forget Project memorial. Despicable. https://t.co/j6Wf1mdyLl" / Twitter

It seems that Fadel's Twitter account has since been deleted.

I'm against American imperialism, too, although I think what this guy did was way out of line.

American boy scouts (are they still a thing) are among the most prolific burners of American flags

Actually, the flag code indicates that burning is the proper method of disposing of an old flag: U.S. Flag Code | Military.com

  1. The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning

Also, burning a flag in protest is considered protected free speech, although it should be one's own flag, not one taken from someone else.

They were left by someone else, though. They weren't his flags, and it wasn't his property they were left on.
Ahh okay. Fair enough then. Maybe the owner told him to dispose of the flags. I’m sure there’s a reasonable explanation.
If the owner didn’t give him permission, then sure the guy is guilty of touching another person’s property. Jerk move.
I still don’t really care since unlike Americans I don’t worship my own flag. (Just an observation, I mean no offence.)
It makes me patriotic don’t get me wrong. But I won’t like press charges if someone chucks away my own flag. I’d tell them off then simply buy another

The article quoted a post he made on Twitter:

Personally, I have no issue against anyone who opposes the U.S. government or wants to protest against American imperialism. But only if they limit their targets to the government and the ruling class. If they attack anyone who is not a government employee or not among the wealthiest 1%, then they're doing it wrong. That's how I see it.

Yes i know, i just find the indignant protests when a muslin burns a flag in protest rather amusing.

Ahh missed that part. Blame the booze. He should be charged with theft then.
That’s all the emotion I can muster. Sorry, it’s still just a flag to me.
