The reference has a lot of images from a cop who is tired of bad cops. Bad cops include not only racist cops but those who should not be cops because of the consequences of a stupid mistake. We need more voices like this cop speaking up.

Was she lazy or undertrained? Even veteran cops need regular training to keep muscle memory working. My claim is that the problem is that police departments are often underfunded since improper training is the cause for many of the wrongful shootings by police. I would hate to see how I would react under such a situation. I know that since I have had no training that I would almost certainly screw up.

I once had a girlfriend that had a drug problem. She attacked me with a tile from a piece of furniture, swinging it rather wildly at me. I was more concerned with the safety of the tile than anything else at that time. When she swung I stepped in grabbed her wrists and did an over the hip throw. She ended up on the grass. Unharmed. I had the tile in my hands. Also unharmed. That was enough to make her come to her senses since I did that with no effort and did not harm her. It has been many years since I trained and I doubt if the muscle memory is there any longer to do such a thing. There was no thought in my disarming of her, only reaction. An hour of training a week might be enough. But I am betting that cops do not get even that.

Even an expert in Judo or equivalent marshal arts is going to have problems taking down someone who is twice their weight and much stronger than them.

I think there should be a minimum height and weight requirement for patrol and/or arresting officers.

Though I trained in karate I can really appreciate mixed martial arts. I am far too old to go back and do that again, but knowing how to use your body weight allows even an underweight officer to at least maintain some control until help comes. In the continuum of force an officer is allowed to be one step above the suspect in their use of force. If a person starts to fight with an officer that is when they can deploy a taser, pepper spray or a baton. Being confident in one's physical skills can enable them to safely delay using lethal force. That should always be the last option and taken with great restraint. But it takes a well trained officer to be able to do that. Poorly trained officers are too apt to jump to that option.

Officers like that are keepers. He's right, keeping a cool level head ought to be a requirement.

State police used to have that requirement until women were introduced to the force which changed that.

Police need to drill, and ,drill, and drill. It helps with automated reflex in situations where the mind races under stress.

I had an ex-boss who became a cop. He was by no means a giant bruiser so height/weight signifies very little if anything at all when it comes to doing the job.

Even guys who barely meet older size requirements need training to deal with people bigger than they are.

Do I ever agree with that.

I studied Aikido many years ago spending a LOT of time learning how to roll. One day many year later I tripped and automatically executed a perfect roll suffering zero injuries. Trained reflex saved me on that occasion.

This is just a minor example of the value of repeated training.

I'm more than willing to pay extra in taxes for such training IF it goes 100% to training of that sort AND there is excellent auditing to verify it was used that way.

So we put people in greater danger(both those being arrested and those arresting) for the sake of political correctness? Wonder if it was worth it ...

Prejudicial BS. Maybe other states have weaklings for cops. This is California's requirements:

Can you do 24 pushups in one minute? 31 sit ups?

Physical Abilities Test
Physical Abilities Test (PAT) Minimum Requirements
  • 24 Push ups (1 min)
  • 31 Sit ups (1 min)
  • 300 Meter run (70 seconds)
  • 1.5 Mile run (13 min, 35 seconds

Not an assessment of the situation, just an additional thought: maybe she was just "under the weather"? Who never had a moment when s/he did something stupid, even an every day task, for no apparent reason? Being tired, ill or just not having all of ones mind in the task can do that.

Wow! Fat old me can become a cop in California!

The "1.5 Mile run" is actually a 1.5 mile quick walk.

I think there should be a minimum height and weight requirement for patrol and/or arresting officers.
But that would be discriminatory against women & tiny men.
We're lucky that they haven't demanded affirmative action
for elderly, paraplegics & quadriplegics in patrol cars.

Although....elderly folk just might be calmer than these
young hotheads.

Life isn't fair. It is not prejudicial to be realistic. You're dealt your cards when you're born. You can improve yourself but you can't change the hand you've been given.

Anyone would be tempted to resort to lethal force if they are confronted with someone much stronger and larger than them. So like it or not; having smaller, physically weaker officers in the field risks endangering everyone involved.

You may be able to do 100 pushups in a minute but if you only way 98 pounds soaking wet then you're going to have a hard time stopping a 250 pound person who is solid muscle. So physical fitness is not the real problem. Just genetics.

I was already wondering how long it would take people to blame police brutality on Political Correctness Gone Mad.

That betrays ignorance of martial arts. And it betrays ignorance of all the times women took out bigger men. Chinese granny who fought off attacker in US praised for bravery for one situation where a grandmother took out a man who attacked her first. A well trained female cop should be able to do that in spades.

This is a myth created by entertainment media.
Kung fu skill doesn't equalize big & little people.
While size isn't everything, it's a helluva lot.

More importantly, a cop should have something more
than the ability to "take out" a civilian who resists arrest.
The cop should subdue with minimal injury to either.
Both skill & size is very useful for this.

Yep. Most people do not know how to fight. But sheer size can make up for a lack of knowledge.
