Pornography and the internet

Pornography is sexual immorality which is spoken against in many passages of scriptures such as 1 Thessalonians 4:3 and Matthew 5:28. What are your thoughts on pornography? Do you think the government should ban it, help people to overcome it or just leave things how they are?

I think you should let folks decide for themselves and not take it upon yourself to decide morality for other folks.

Religion IMO should be private, between you and your God. What other people do is their business.

Technological advances in our modern times has allowed us to reach great feats. This 'computer age' as some have called it, has given us an unprecedented amount of convenience: computer and mechanical systems are able to do things for us in the fraction of the time it would otherwise take us to do. However, one of the main disadvantages of technology, specifically the internet, is the prevalence of pornography. All of us have been exposed to various elements of 'pornea'. Whether that's in advertisements such as what I can see on the religiousforums adverts, advertising dating sites with scantily clad women, at least when I'm using a shared computer. In Google Chrome I got messages saying things like 'Russian girls want to date in your area' with depictions of again, very immodestly 'dressed' women. Even on Youtube - a supposedly family friendly video upload site - contains gravure and sometimes pornography appears on that site. Youtube, as do many other sites like Tumblr, Twitter and Instagram have dark sides to them.

Thankfully, as a religious person I've been able to excise myself from the internet and television with Yahshua's help. I no longer have a tv or a broadband connection and this, though quite extreme, has helped me to focus on spirituality and observe what Yahshua said in the Beatitudes, to cut off whatever is a source of stumbling (Matthew 5:29-30). I still download Netflix shows at the library and then watch them when I get home so I do have some form of entertainment.

I'm writing this thread because I don't know what's going on in your private homes, but Yahweh is an El who sees in secret (Matthew 6:4, 2 Kings 17:9), therefore it's the secret sins that are often the worst rightly so because part of the conscience is telling the perpetrator that they are indeed shameful hence 'secret'. I'm curious to know how other people avoid the constant bombardment of sex and sexualised footage and images on the internet. I feel for those who are spiritually weak and don't have Yahshua to call upon. Acts 4:12 tells us that this name is the only name in which there is salvation because Yahshua means Yahweh is salvation. That was the Messiah's hebrew name. I suspect that those who are spiritually weak are going to have a big problem using the internet as they are opportunities to sin in so many avenues and with the simple click of a button.

30,000 thousand children die every day, probably in the most painful circumstances. ... families broken, pain, etc. every single day.

and you are worried about Netflix and what Joshua, Yahshua, or Whomever divinity with screwed up priorities you might believe in, will think about our TVs showing too much of the way He designed us to procreate?

If you don't want to watch porn, don't watch porn. If I want to watch porn, that's between me and HaShem. Watching porn will likely decrease the amount of casual sex people have - and rape, as others have pointed out. I'm a really religious person and I only watch porn every now and again but it helps give me a release and take away the frustration. I think I'd rather do that than have lots of casual sex.

Hi soda.
No one said about using porn. Sexualised images and videos are prevalent on the internet. You don’t have to go to a porn site to be exposed to evil. For example, I only watch 2-3 Netflix shows now because of the amount of sex these programmes and films have in them.

You understand the problem here, right? It's that your book seems to say it's "evil" and yet you can't stop thinking about it if you see it. The problem is yours, my friend.

I personally love porn. It's great.

I have a late friend who used to do a lot of government contract work with the internet (security and that sort of thing). He said that the net is 90% porn now.

That's actually a myth perpetuated by TV shows. I've heard that same claim in the Simpsons in the 90's. And again in Futurama.

90% of it is actually military / scientific / commercial data. You'll never see it though.

Leave things as they are. What is inherently bad about pornography?

Why is that an issue but we watch murder in movies, people rape others, etc and we're just fine with it because they are just acting?

Porn actors are just actors. Some people like it others do not. When you see a movie and a sex scene comes on, why is that better to watch than another movie that theme's around sex?

Also, scripture is not everyone's foundation for morality; so, it's irrelevant in this case.

Government Censorship? Hmm. I think not.
A quick look at history seems to show that little good comes from government censorship.

What is the government going to do to help people overcome it? That suggestion is too vague for me to support.

Perhaps there should exist reasonable restrictions and penalties on the production, distribution, and consumption of porn. So pretty much we should just keep or tweak the status quo.

One of your objections appears to be to pornographic advertisement. Perhaps someone has a reasonable suggestion concerning pornographic advertisement.

IMO:
"Freedom of Religion" should not mean "Freedom to impose a porn ban"

Better:
Advise religious people to practise self control. They better learn to control themselves, instead of trying to control others.

That's not a social commandment. Its a true commandment then its also not a social commandment, which means we can step on it just to poke fun on religion. Its not very practical.

One way to misuse our God given need for sexual gratification is to avoid unnecessary exposure to sexually inspiring experiences. But another is to ensure that you have achieved sexual gratification at a regular interval. i find that achieving sexual gratification at a regular interval is an essential part of avoiding the desire to entertain thoughts that one would not want to share with others.

in what contexts would you find it permissible to an individual to achieve sexual gratification?

I don't think the word gratified in a single instance, and avoiding any sexual immorality was a Commandment in forming marriage we know today. My experience is then its just as a private record to yourself something people can take away from you, I mean, where in Christ's Gospel are we to hold onto dear life to any of our possessions, and God takes care of al the Birds who do not spin clothes or make houses. This is all just down some path about a private possession coveted to be taken. Public nudity classroom , art or marketing, sinful societies. A Puritanical society is Actually a burden not on you, the Other person.

Even on YouTube, two of my favorite Video makers use pornographic images to draw viewers in. One is "Sailing La Vagabonde" and the other is about a couple living in a Yurt near Juneau, AK. There are countless others.

Years ago, it was said that 70% of the Internet was Porn. For those not old enough to remember, the Internet was originally a way for University nerds to experiment with sending messages back and forth. Of course, many Undergraduates being what they are, lewd pictures soon got into the mix. AND, in certain Creative Writing Classes, Professors assigned writing assignments that would have "Unseemly" content as a way to start the creative juices flowing.

It is doubtful that Porn can be gotten off the Internet. We can, however control ourselves.

Could you repeat this again, only in English next time? I'm having a hard time finding a consistent message in this.
