Okay, I’ll be the bad guy and say what no one else is brave enough to say, but wants to say. I’ll take all the criticism and attacks from everyone because you know what? I’m a TEACHER. I live this life daily. And I wouldn’t do anything else! But I also know daily I could end up in an active shooter situation.

Until we, as a country, are willing to get serious and talk about mental health issues, lack of available care for the mental health issues, lack of discipline in the home, horrendous lack of parental support when the schools are trying to control horrible behavior at school (oh no! Not MY KID. What did YOU do to cause my kid to react that way?), lack of moral values, and yes, I’ll say it-violent video games that take away all sensitivity to ANY compassion for others’ lives, as well as reality TV that makes it commonplace for people to constantly scream up in each others’ faces and not value any other person but themselves, we will have a gun problem in school. Our kids don’t understand the permanency of death anymore!!!

I grew up with guns. Everyone knows that. But you know what? My parents NEVER supported any bad behavior from me. I was terrified of doing something bad at school, as I would have not had a life until I corrected the problem and straightened my *** out. My parents invaded my life. They knew where I was ALL the time. They made me have a curfew. They made me wake them up when I got home. They made me respect their rules. They had full control of their house, and at any time could and would go through every inch of my bedroom, backpack, pockets, anything! Parents: it’s time to STEP UP! Be the parent that actually gives a crap! Be the annoying mom that pries and knows what your kid is doing. STOP being their friend. They have enough “friends” at school. Be their parent. Being the “cool mom” means not a damn thing when either your kid is dead or your kid kills other people because they were allowed to have their space and privacy in YOUR HOME. I’ll say it again. My home was filled with guns growing up. For God’s sake, my daddy was an 82nd Airborne Ranger who lost half his face serving our country. But you know what? I never dreamed of shooting anyone with his guns. I never dreamed of taking one! I was taught respect for human life, compassion, rules, common decency, and most of all, I was taught that until I moved out, my life and bedroom wasn’t mine...it was theirs. And they were going to know what was happening because they loved me and wanted the best for me.

There. Say that I’m a horrible person. I didn’t bring up gun control, and I will refuse to debate it with anyone. This post wasn’t about gun control. This was me, loving the crap out of people and wanting the best for them. This was about my school babies and knowing that God created each one for greatness, and just wanting them to reach their futures. It’s about 20 years ago this year I started my teaching career. Violence was not this bad 20 years ago. Lack of compassion wasn’t this bad 20 years ago. And God knows 20 years ago that I wasn’t afraid daily to call a parent because I KNEW that 9 out of 10 would cuss me out, tell me to go to Hell, call the news on me, call the school board on me, or post all over FaceBook about me because I called to let them know what their child chose to do at school...because they are a NORMAL kid!!!!!

Those 17 lives mattered. When are we going to take our own responsibility seriously?

What an excellent post.

That teacher make some very good points, especially concerning the impact of seeing violence over and over again in video games and on T.V. and the desensitizing effect of this on people's minds and attitudes, the lack of compassion, lack of morals, lack of discipline, and lack of understanding or caring about the permanency of death.

The teacher did not have facts correct and fails the grade. Total violent crime reported in the US is less per person - it has not being going up. And another failure is to assume that parents are the sole influence in children and can mold them like clay. That's wrong as well. That teacher has an axe to grind and should have stuck to facts not propaganda.

If there is a solution, don't expect it to be quick. The problem is much bigger than anyone can give a simple solution to.

I still believe that the gun issue has to be done in small steps. Getting rid of guns isn't a viable answer. If idiots start using cars to hit school buses head on, or running over children in cross walks, what then? Car control? Eliminate them?

At our current rate, it's just a matter of time before a nuclear event happens killing much more than guns at school. Then the focus will change.

To attack evils tools are useless. The focus needs to be on the evil itself.

I find it ironic that the more the Christian concept is erased from this country, the more that evil minds see a functioning playground.

It's definitely a parenting problem. People prefer to attack objects rather than the person.

I was handling firearms since 12. My high school had a gun club. But rest assured if I ever got reckless or careless, there would be hell to pay.

Sad thing is my generation has the distinction of being the worse parents ever for their children. I also levy the dismantling of the nuclear family as being a part of the issues at hand with kids although I understand why families left their kids as latchkey children.

I was checking recently of the cities with the highest murder rates. While Detroit has the most, Chicago was #8. Baltimore, Oakland, Stockton (CA) in the top ten as well. What surprised me is that most of the top 20 cities that were highest in murder rates, were in the states with the strongest gun control.

I also noted that Florida, with one of the least restrictive gun control, is now at the bottom of the list of the top 30 cities. Miami at 27 and Orlando at 29. At one time, Miami was in the top 5. The nations first Stand Your Ground law went into effect in 2005. And crime dropped dratically. Today, a small group are once again calling for gun control due to the Parkland shootings.

Point: When a good idea works to reduce crime, there's always an idiot to screw things up, and people see only one thing. I feel bad 17 children and adults lost their lives. But what about the hundreds that are alive today due to an idea that worked over time?

Yes, it can be a parenting problem unless there is brain damage to the conscience.
That is why there are people who are afraid to adopt a child because if the child comes with a damaged conscience then that child can do what ever they want and fell no regret, no remorse.
There are babies who are abused after birth, and there are un-born babies whose pregnant mother is punched or kicked in the stomach as to produce and abortion, but instead they end up with a baby with an damaged conscience from the physical abuse given to the pregnant mother.

Since modern-day society does Not want to ' house ' such mentally ill, then how can they be trusted.

All of the other first world countries have violent games/movies and secular schools that don't teach religion or use corporal punishment, yet they don't have these issues with violence like we do. That teacher's smug, sanctimonious letter is rubbish.
Really?
The US is #14, with China and Russia both having more murders per capita.

China isn't a first world country, and its government does censor violent games and movies.

Teaching about religion objectively isn't the same as the indoctrination/proselytization that occurs at religious schools.
Besides, those countries have a vastly greater proportion of nonreligious citizens than does the U.S. regardless.

Well, clearly this teacher isn't. This teacher can merrily look forward to yet another year of mass shootings, probably about 50 of them in school premises. Denial to the point of some kind of neurosis?

By all means address issues such as the horrendous financial imbalances in society, the media adoration of celebrities, group victimisation of loners, etc........ but for Big-G's sake just wake up and focus on gun control.!!

Here's waiting in sadness for the next mass murder ................. probably in the next weeks?
