Some people's secret is not to be entered into

NewChapter

GiveMeATicketToWork
Hi,

This is Genesis 49:5-7, and it tells the reader that some people's "secret" is NOT to be entered into.

Genesis 49:5-7
King James Version (KJV)
(5)Simeon and Levi are brethren; instruments of cruelty are in their habitations. (6)O my soul, come not thou into their secret; unto their assembly, mine honour, be not thou united: for in their anger they slew a man, and in their selfwill they digged down a wall. (7)Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.

Your thoughts on this? :)

It makes sense - not to be part of the plotting and planning of bad deeds to be done by rotten people.

Do you get something else out of it?

Lol yes the word "secret" is of special significance to me.

That is the word of God, and not the word of Noah (me.)

It is just another way of saying he is not complicit in his sons' actions and conspiracies.

Then why not just say, I am not complicit in my sons' actions and conspiracies?

No, it is saying that their secret is not to be entered into.

He is saying that. Just in archaic soul-searching language.

Onkelos renders it, "my soul was not in their secret";

I glanced at the first few words in the Hebrew - and it says something like -

Gen 49:6 Secret councils never entered into my heart/being; their assembly never joined ...

My thoughts are that there are types of people, Simeon and Levi types, whom God does not want people who have the ability to listen to people's private thoughts, God does not want those people to listen to Simeon and Levi types' private thoughts.

I know from experience that there is a very strong possibility that there are people who, like Jesus, have the ability to know or listen to people's private thoughts. God does not want people to listen to or know the private thoughts of ("enter into the secret of") Simeon and Levi types.

Are you meaning telepathy?

The verse in the Hebrew, - put back in word order, - says something like -

Gen 49:6 Secret councils never entered into my heart/being; their assembly never joined ...

This makes it very plain that they are talking the real conspiracies his sons put forward and committed.

The word translated "secret" is actually the first word.

He is saying his heart - Being - soul, never entered into the secret conspiracies of his sons.

You need to read it in context.

Gen 49:1 And Jacob called unto his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the last days.

Gen 49:2 Gather yourselves together, and hear, ye sons of Jacob; and hearken unto Israel your father.

Gen 49:3 Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power:

Gen 49:4 Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father's bed; then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch.

This is referring to his incest with Bilhah, his father's concubine/wife.

Gen 49:5 Simeon and Levi are brethren; instruments of cruelty are in their habitations.

With these they shed the blood of the Shechemites very barbarously, while they slept. Gen 34:25. There is some debate over meaning here, as swords, or the spoils, brought back from their evil acts. Either way, they conspired to kill all the men.

Gen 49:6 O my soul, come not thou into their secret; unto their assembly, mine honour, be not thou united: for in their anger they slew a man, and in their selfwill they digged down a wall.

And Jacob didn't join with their conspiracies and actions.

Gen 49:6 Secret councils never entered into my heart/being; their assembly never joined ...

Gen 49:7 Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.

I'll go with the word of language scholars over yours.

LOL! I suggest you reread what I've posted.

I went to the actual Hebrew, - so should you!

I also gave you the work of Onkelos.

Here are some more for you.

John GILL's Exposition of the Entire Bible - Genesis 49:6
"O my soul, come not thou into their secret
,.... Their cabinet counsels, combinations and conspiracies; this Jacob said, as abhorring the wicked counsel they had took of slaying the Shechemites;"

John WESLEY's Explanatory Notes - Genesis 49:6

"They slew a man - Shechem himself, and many others; and to effect that, they digged down a wall, broke the houses to plunder them, and murder the inhabitants. O my soul, come not thou into their secret - Hereby he professeth not only his abhorrence of such practices in general, but his innocency particularly in that matter."

Matthew HENRY's Commentary on the Whole Bible - "Jacob's protestation against this barbarous act of theirs: O my soul, come not thou into their secret. Hereby he professes not only his abhorrence of such practices in general, but his innocence particularly in that matter."

Ma'am, with all due respect you are not a scholar whereas the Bible translators are scholars.

Again their views and opinions outrank yours.
