Why would he bother? just makes huckabee look bad

I agree. I was a bit surprised by how reasoned the explanation from Huckabee was. I'm still skeptical though.

From what I've read about Huckabee in one of his books, he seems like a real douche bag.

He and his family dealt with it and were honest and open about it with the victims and the authorities.
Really? According to the news story:
1. Jim Bob (the father) lied to the church leadership and perhaps the police and said that they had sent their son to a "counseling" program. His wife later admitted that it was a family friend, not a counselor. In other words, Josh was never treated.
2. When Jim Bob spoke with police in 2006, he said that he took his son Josh to see an Arkansas state trooper, Jim Hutchens, who took no official action and gave him a "very stern talk." Hutchens was later convicted of child pornography offenses and is now serving a 56 year prison sentence. One wonders why Hutchens in particular was approached?
3. What prompted them to come to the police in 2006?
When the family was scheduled to appear on Oprah Winfrey’s talk show in 2006, an email was sent to the show warning them about the alleged molestation. The email was written by a 61-year-old female who is not identified.
Harpo Studios faxed the letter to the Department of Human Services hotline. The report was then opened for investigation, leading to the investigation by Springdale police.
When police asked Jim Bob to bring Josh in for an interview in 2006, he attempted to hire a lawyer and refused to produce his son for questioning. At least two lawyers refused to take his case. "Det. Hignite received a voice mail from Mr. Duggar stating that [redacted] had hired an attorney and would not be coming in for an interview."
Salt of the earth these people.
After all of this experience with child molestation, the Duggars concluded that they weren't a threat, but gay people were, and lead a campaign against nondiscrimination ordinances being adopted by Arkansas municipalities like Fayetteville:
Michelle Duggar also ran a robocall pushing for the repeal of the city’s nondiscrimination ordinance, which she warned would empower “child predators” to threaten “the safety and innocence of a child.”
This is no surprise coming from Huckabee, who will give anyone another chance if they confess to Jesus (even if they don't confess to the secular authorities, apparently):
As governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee aggressively pushed for the early release of a convicted rapist despite being warned by numerous women that the convict had sexually assaulted them or their family members, and would likely strike again. The convict went on to rape and murder at least one other woman.
Confidential Arkansas state government records, including letters from these women, revealed publicly for the first time, directly contradict the version of events now being put forward by Huckabee.
While on the campaign trail, Huckabee has claimed that he supported the 1999 release of Wayne Dumond because, at the time, he had no good reason to believe that the man represented a further threat to the public. Thanks to Huckabee's intervention, conducted in concert with a right-wing tabloid campaign on Dumond's behalf, Dumond was let out of prison 25 years before his sentence would have ended.
Tough on gays, yes, but relatively soft on sex criminals.

Once again, it looks as if the argument is for kids to only be raped by the right kind of people. Because then it isn't really "rape" so much as it is an "indiscretion" that can easily be cured with prayer and repentence.

What I think people do not understand is that for people like Huckabee and the Duggars, sin is sin (except maybe homosexuality which has been made into a strange boogeyman). What makes the act of child sexual abuse sinful is that it is not conducted within the framework of permissible sexual outlets; it has nothing to do with coercion, inability to consent or the other secular justifications for criminalization. Indeed, Huckabee routinely conflates homosexuality with pedophilia, almost certainly because he doesn’t recognize much of a distinction between sex between consenting adults and sex with children, regardless of the biological sex of the parties involved. Huckabee is truly scary because he actually is a theocrat: What Josh did was wrong not because he broke a secular law, but because he sinned against God. When he repented, that was sufficient.

Even at 14 or 15, molestation of prepubescent children is grounds for concern and is a step beyond being a "misbehaving teenager" I think. Moreover, the cover-up is itself a significant scandal.
