What is the difference between pagan DIR and new age DIR?

Is the new age DIR referring to topics like metaphysics and such while paganism is more religion?

They cross-over a lot but in general, yes. New Age is crystals, "quantum physics", and other such bull****. Paganism might also be bull****, but it's old bull**** that has been handed down for thousands of years.

Ever the diplomat. :D

The thing I've seen that distinguishes New Age from Paganism/Neo-Paganism is that it seems to apply imagery, vernacular, and tools based on a very loose understanding of Romantic-Era conceptions of pre-Christian religions together with modern divination practices(such as Tarot), to a loose interpretation of Eastern-type philosophies (Buddhism and Daoism most prominently).

Paganism/Neo-Paganism doesn't generally do that.

That would mean Paganism/Neo-paganism would be actual religions--say Wiccan,
Mythological oriented faiths, etc while New Age lacks structure and just deals with practices taken from various religions and western and eastern concepts?

Also, did you press "reply"? I didn't receive an alert.

I wouldn't go so far to say that New Age isn't a religion or body of religions. I would say that it's definitely not really organized or terribly standardized which makes classification tricky, but it's definitely a religion, even if loosely. I don't have a particular fondness for New Age, but that's more because it's prone to scams than any inherent aspects.

Pagan and Neo-Pagan religions (and yes, those two terms are a WHOLE 'nother subject of debate and controversy) can also be loose or organized. It really depends. While I consider this lack of hard standardization a strength of all three, it does make hard classification incredibly tricky.

No, I just responded to the thread. If you want an alert for that, there's a button at the top of threads that reads "Watch Thread". Click that, and every time a new post is made in the watched thread, you should get an alert.

Oh. Every time I create a thread, it automatically lets me watch whoever posts to me directly unless I set my alert to get any thread that post in this forum even though it's not for me. I keep the setting at alert when my post is quoted so I wont have to get alerts from hundred people who aren't talking to me directly.

Unfortunately, I miss posts to me that way since they may be just posting in the box below or quoting me instead of replying, I don't know. Still new.

As with the new age thing, I've always been kind of funny with it. I admire structured belief systems and really don't use practices unless they make natural sense rather than symbolism and they don't directly insult the culture of another belief system.

Does anyone really consider themselves New Agers or stick to Pagan?

I'm not a New Ager because I don't hold with 99.999% of its beliefs. I think that if we want to split labeling hairs, I'm technically not Pagan either, but rather, a Semi-Firm Polytheistic Heathen.

It's okay. We recently overhauled the entire website, so we're still kind of figuring things out, too.

Different strokes for different folks. ^_^ I'm all about symbols.

Interesting. What is an Asatru?

The religion of the Norse people, the Vikings. Asatru literally means "true to the Aesir", the Aesir being the Gods of Asgard. It's being reconstructed from ancient Scandinavian texts (Icelandic, actually). Asatru is the religion, Asatruar is the follower. My avi is a cartoon of Thor cuddling his baby goats, my name means "Thunder bear".

Oh, while we're at it, a few others.

Hellenism/Olympianism is Greek Polytheism.
Kemeticism/Neterism is Egyptian Polytheism.
Religio Romana is Roman Polytheism.

Wow. That's deep. What brought you to that faith? Who is Asgard?
