Insulting the prophet

This doesn't wash. It is muslims who are rioting over religion these days, not other people, even though religions get insulted all the time.

I mentioned this earlier:

The Last Temptation of Christ (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

On October 22, 1988, a French Christian fundamentalist group launched Molotov cocktails inside the Parisian Saint Michel movie theater while it was showing the film. This attack injured thirteen people, four of whom were severely burned.

I don't accept that. People are rioting everywhere for lots of different reasons. Heck the Greeks even riot because they're lazy. If you believe the stereotype.

There are also instances of Christians attacking mosques in the USA.

But maybe it is not because they ar muslim that they riot, maybe it is just a coincidence.

This is my point. Had I called Mohammad a smurf (even though that makes no sense, given his lack of blue skin) there would be people out there thirsting for my blood.

There are people out for Andrew Lloyd Webber's blood for Jesus Christ Superstar.

Oh, please. See above. Besides, if you've spent any amount of time on the internet, you should know that people get over-emotional over the most petty things, which would probably turn into riots if their pettiness was shared by enough people in a single area.

Though... I do wonder, how accurate is the journalism reporting on the riots?

For the record, I live in a town full of fundamentalist Christians. Yet, there have been no riots over religion in the twenty years I've lived here. None.

So why is that?
Is it a cultural thing or a political thing or what?

Can anyone decrease my ignorance on this topic?

Salman Rushdie seems to believe that it's rooted in an honor code. Apparently, he thinks Muslims care more about honor and shame than adherents of most other religions. I don't know enough about it to guess whether he's right about that, but I find his thoughts on it interesting.

Except that honor and shame play a huge part in Japanese culture, at least historically, and AFAIK, there aren't many riots over there.

Ummmm.... JCS was fricken years ago... how is this relevant to now?

People who were alive back then are still alive now, and not in nursing homes. It wasn't that long ago.

If it was that long ago, then the current Muslim riots will be irrelevant in a few decades, and we may as well just weather it until both sides calm down and find something else to hate.
