Lord Narasimha & Lord Shiva

Though my devotion is focused on Sri Sri Radha-Krishna, of late I have been feeling very much drawn to both Lord Narasimha & Lord Shiva, especially to Lord Narasimha. I have some (some!?) internal demons I need to destroy. Maybe I am subconsciously appealing to Lord Narasimha to help me fight and destroy these demons? I welcome his fierce and fearsome aspect. I include Him in my daily prayers with this:

I offer my respectful obeisance unto Lord Narasimhadeva, the source of all power. O my Lord Who possesses nails and teeth just like thunderbolts, kindly vanquish our demon-like desires for fruitive activity in this material world. Please appear in our hearts and drive away our ignorance so that by Your mercy we may become fearless in the struggle for existence in this material world.

I am also feeling drawn to Lord Shiva, in that I want to get to know Him better. I know He is the destroyer of negativity, lust, and is the embodiment of asceticism and meditative peace. I say a prayer to Him also:

I salute that Ishvara along with Bhavani, who is as white as camphor, an incarnation of compassion, the essence of this world, who wears a bhujagendra around his neck and is ever present in the lotus abode of our hearts.

Om Trayambakam Yajaamahey Sugandhim Pushti Vardhanam
Urvaarukamiva Bandhanaath Mrutyor Muksheeya Maamritaat

I know that Bhavani is a ferocious aspect of Maa Parvati, but is also compassionate and full of mercy.

So what really is going on here?

I don't know... you're just a Hindu?

Alot of Gaudiya Vaishnavas who are from ISKCON worship Lord Nrsimhadeva, and out of all His incarnations, worship Him for protection. So before they go on any outing, or if they are on a journey in the car, they always chant Nrsimhadeva Pranama in order to receive protection. Prahlada Maharaja is considered one of the greatest Vaishnavas on this planet.

All ISKCON prayers chant this pranama mantra:

Bhajan - Visvambhar das - Nrsimhadev Prayers - YouTube

And there are many versions to it:

Namaste Narasimhaya - YouTube

(1)
namas te narasiḿhāya
prahlādāhlāda-dāyine
hiraṇyakaśipor vakṣaḥ-
śilā-ṭańka-nakhālaye

(2)
ito nṛsiḿhaḥ parato nṛsiḿho
yato yato yāmi tato nṛsiḿhaḥ
bahir nṛsiḿho hṛdaye nṛsiḿho
nṛsiḿham ādiḿ śaraṇaḿ prapadye

TRANSLATION
1) I offer my obeisances to Lord Narasimha, who gives joy to Prahlada Maharaja and whose nails are like chisels on the stone like chest of the demon Hiranyakasipu.

2) Lord Nrsimha is here and also there. Wherever I go Lord Nrsimha is there. He is in the heart and is outside as well. I surrender to Lord Nrsimha, the origin of all things and the supreme refuge.

This is also a popular mantra, and the first part of the stotra is utilised in kirtanas at temple.

Ah, did not know that. I have a small murthi of Lord Ganesha in my truck (lorry for those across the pond). I say Om Sri Ganeshaya namaha or Om Sri Mahaganapataye namaha. I could keep a wallet sized pic of Lord Nrsimhadeva in there too. What is Nrsimhadeva Pranama?

This is also a popular mantra, and the first part of the stotra is utilised in kirtanas at temple.

Jaya Nrsimha, Sri Nrsimha, Jaya Jaya Nrsimha
Praladesha jaya padma, mukha padma brnga

"Victory/hail Lord Nrsimha... " What is the 2nd line?

I'm just so ignorant. :(

:p

I have the first Youtube vid in my collection. I recognized the lyrics. I will look at the others too. Heck I may already have them; I've been collecting kirtans, mantras and bhajans from Youtube.

TouchedbytheLord maybe you are Smarta after all :D

According to one legend Lord Shiva took the form of half animal - half bird to calm down Lord Nirishma after he killed the demon

Lord Narasimha's terrifying rage could not be dissipated even after He had slain the Demon King Hiranyakashipu. A more ferocious form of Sharabha was able to pacify Narasimha Vishnu. Soon Vishnu appeared in the pleasant form before his devotees.

I knew that Lord Nrsimhadeva was on a rampage, not unlike Maa Kali. It took a while to calm Them down, with the devas fearing They were uncontrollable. I'll have to read the article. Thanks. :)

Actually I think that as the greatest Vaishnava, Lord Shiva is to be emulated and admired. Maybe that's part of it.

Yes and Lord Vishnu is the greatest Shivite/follower off Shiva - he was even willing to take out his own eye and place it on the Lingam in worship of Lord Shiva
Lord Vishnu applied His discuss on Sage Thatheesi for a king named Kuban. When the discus touched the divine body of the sage, it lost is sharpness. Worried Lord Vishnu consulted with Devas and came to know that Lord Shiva has the Sudharsana discus which he created to destroy demon Chalandarasura. Lord Vishnu came to this place and worshipped Lord Shiva with thousand flowers a day. To test the determination of Vishnu, Lord Shiva caused shortage of one flower. To make up the shortage, Lord Vishnu immediately plucked his eye and offered it in the puja. Pleased with his determination, Lord Shiva restored His eye saying that “as you offered your eye for a lotus flower, you will have the eye with lotus beauty and you will be known as Padmashan. Lord Shiva also gave His discus to Vishnu.

Chakra - (Wheel) it means a wheel or force field, its name is Chakra Sudarshana.
It was made by Lord Siva and gifted to Lord Vishnu as a token of love. The story of Lord Vishnu's most excellent devotion to Lord Shiva is relayed in a story where Lord Vishnu offered a thousand lotuses to Lord Siva every day. One day in order to test the sincerity of Lord Vishnu, Lord Siva hid one of the lotuses. During worship, Lord Vishnu discovered that he was one lotus short, in order to complete his vrata he then plucked one of his eyes out and offered it to Lord Siva. Lord Siva became highly pleased and gave his prized weapon that he had labour through intense Tapas (austerities) to make.

Here is another version of the story from vishnu symbols

Once upon a time there were two great traditions, Vaishnavism, and Shaivism ... each seeing their version as Supreme, and leaving the other side alone to merrily go about their ways... and then along came Ego Intellect and messed the whole darn thing up. Then a third group came along, trying to take the middle path, combining both. What happened? Ego Intellect made sure there were now 3 groups battling for superiority. Then a forth came along saying men fight too much, so we should worship the Woman side. That shall cure all the problems. And now we have four groups, each with possession of their own Ego Intellect, each battling for the right to be Superior. :)

Something like that, anyway. Wisdom soars within, back to the olden days.

True indeed, Vinayakaji. However, I still wonder why this new attraction to and affection for Lord Shiva. It's come to me like a bolt out of the blue. Sri Krishna's Vishvarupa to Arjuna shows all beings and devas in Himself, so maybe I'm coming to see Lord Shiva (and Lord Ganesha) as an expansion of Lord Krishna just as Lord Rama, Lord Narasimhadeva are... I think I may see Them as "facets" of Lord Krishna for Their special "talents", just as we show different facets and talents of our personalities to different people. OK, now I'm overthinking this again.

It is Good to know you are a good Bhakt, i would also add to your prayers the Gaytri Mantra, and also "Tvameva Mata cha Pita Tvameva", in there as well, good on you.

What is Nrsimhadeva Pranama?

The first two videos and the lyrics I posted beneath is the Nrsimha pranama, or prayers to Lord Nrsimhadeva.

Victory/hail Lord Nrsimha... " What is the 2nd line?

:p

Apparently translates as:

"Glories to Lord Nrsimha, Sri Nrsimha, All Glories to Lord Nrsimhadeva. The Lord of Prahlada, like a honeybee, is always engaged in beholding the lotuslike face of the goddess of fortune."

Oh yes, I say those. :) But I say the Tvameva Mata cha Pita Tvameva in English. I don't know why, as I say other prayers in Sanskrit.
